The betting suggests this is between former winner and last year’s short-head runner-up Order Of St George and Goodwood Cup winner Stradivarius, but I’m not sure it’s that clear-cut and the latter horse does have his stamina to prove over this trip, having not races beyond 2m before. He promises to stay but there are no such doubts over Order Of St George and he has looked as good as ever in two starts this term. Of the pair, he’s the safest option.

But it would be wrong to underestimate French challenger Vazirabad, the winner of the last three Dubai Gold Cups at Meydan who was fancied for this 12 months ago only to miss out due to a setback.

He’s worth considering at Betfair’s 5/1 but a couple of others have the form to outrun their odds, including David Elsworth’s DESERT SKYLINE. He has two lengths to find on Stradivarius on their running in last month’s Yorkshire Cup, but he was conceding 3lb to the winner and the 1m6f trip would have been the bare minimum for him. He was very strong at the finish when scoring over 2m2f at Doncaster last season and he could be in his element over today’s extra two furlongs. In which case, he’s going to be hard to keep out of the frame and bet365 is the place to back him each-way as they go 14/1 and one quarter the odds.
