The key to finding the winner of this ultra competitive handicap is to side with a lightly-raced improver with handicap experience and winning form over a mile. Nine of the last ten winners had run no more than six times, while those horses coming from maiden company are 0-15 in the last decade. That does narrow the 30-strong field down to a more manageable size and one that makes most appeal is Hugo Palmer’s CORROSIVE. The winner of three of his four races, the latest coming in a handicap run over course and distance off just 4lb lower, he runs here instead of taking up a more ambitious entry in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes. I doubt he’s quite at that level and he’d be a near-certainty here if he was, but he’s very likely a Group horse in the making and Josephine Gordon (3-3) clearly gets the best out of him.

He’s drawn 24 and that fine as ideally you want to be on either wing over the straight mile here – four of the last 12 winners were boxed in 23 to 30, with four drawn one to six – and that’s a plus for stablemate Curiosity, who will exit from stall 33. He’s just one of the many dangers and the temptation is to also to back one drawn on the other side of the track. Ed Walker’s SIMPSON will come out of stall two and he is better than his form figures of ‘536’ would suggest, with his fifth behind Crossed Baton and subsequent Derby second Dee Ex Bee at Epsom on his reappearance looking strong form indeed. A little unlucky in the Silver Bowl at Haydock last time, he could run a huge race off his low weight and the 50/1 on offer at Coral should be snapped up – each-way of course – while it lasts.
