Lady jockeys are very much in the news and rightly so after a brilliance team performance to land Saturday’s Shergar Cup. Megan Nicholls, daughter of trainer Paul, would have been watching and she could be spurred on to victory on Clive Cox’s PRESSURE in the closing apprentice handicap at the Wiltshire track (5.00pm), in which whips can be carried but not used.

The three-year-old, who showed some promise in three runs at two, surely has a small handicap in him off his current lowly mark of 67. He didn’t quite see out a mile on soft ground at Chepstow last time, having made most of the running, yet still held in for fourth, and his previous fourth at Newbury can be upgraded as he was kicked down at the start and may have been feeling that when hanging.

As a horse who likes to be ridden prominently, he looks ideal for a race of this nature as he could enjoy an uncontested lead up front and we know he stays a bit further. What’s more, his trainer also has a good record in apprentice handicaps with five of his 26 runners (19%) in such races over the past five seasons obliging and backing them all would have yielded a tidy £1 level-stakes profit of £16.25.
