John Gosden has a 1-3 strike rate at the Midlands venue and his Malaf is likely to be all the rage for this modest handicap now he’s switching back to a synthetic surface. He certainly seemed to relish Tapeta (not surprising given his American pedigree) when winning on his sole juvenile start over course and distance, and there wasn’t much wrong with his reappearance fourth at Nottingham back in April.

However, he’s clearly one of the stable’s lesser lights and the fact connections are reaching for first-time cheek-pieces suggests he may not be that straightforward. At just 6/4 in what looks a trappy handicap, he makes little appeal and the best value alternative is Marco Botti’s SAMMY’S WARRIOR, who returned to action with a win over course and distance and should have more to offer after just two starts. The form of that victory looks solid as the runner-up Amaze Me has been placed in Listed company since and is now rated 85. The selection could therefore be well treated off the same mark and Marc Monaghan takes a handy 3lb off his back. If only his stable were in better form (just one winner in the last fortnight), he’d be a more confident pick.
