This is a real conundrum for punters but if past results are anything to go by it could pay to concentrate on those near the bottom of the handicap. The mighty Baracouda is the only horse to carry more than 11st to victory since 1998 and he was the last winner rated higher than 135 when defying a mark of 170 in 2004. That would appear to rule out the current Paul Nicholls-trained favourite, Topofthegame (11st 7lb, 142), while the next in the betting, Harry Fry’s Melrose Bay is bang on the ceiling mark of 135 with 11st to carry. That said, the latter is not easily passed over having enjoyed a nice confidence booster last time following a slightly below par third behind Mr Whipped, who has franked the form since.

However, the double-digit price of DASHING PERK earns the Dr Richard Newland-trained seven-year-old the vote and he absolutely fits the trends, having been given an initial handicap mark of 127 and with just 10st 6lb on his back. He may well have got in lightly too given his smart bumper form and an effortless success in a Wincanton novice on his most recent hurdles outing. He didn’t have much to beat on that occasion and an earlier second behind Imperial Bay at Chepstow in November is probably the stronger form line, but he’s clearly going the right way and is evidently held in high regard judging by a 3m Grade 1 novice entry at the Cheltenham Festival. His trainer was talking about running him in another novice under a penalty and must think he’s well handicapped to pitch him into the deep end here, although a first prize of £56k may have helped sway his mind. It could prove to be a smart move and in Jamie Moore the selection is not going to lack for assistance from the saddle either.
