It was advantage Switzerland after the first round of Group E matches. Despite Serbia topping the group, a slender 1-0 victory over Costa Rica might prove to be insubstantial when all the games have been played.

The Eagles now meet a Swiss team who drew 1-1 against Brazil and know that a draw in this clash would mean a victory over the Costa Ricans by a two-goal margin or bigger should be enough to get over the line.

Serbia huffed and puffed against Los Ticos before Aleksandar Kolarov produced some magic from a free-kick, although this is a match that they might have to win before facing a dangerous Brazil side in their final game.

One thing is for sure, we are not expecting an expansive match, with both sides likely to start the encounter in a cagey fashion.

Switzerland’s defence stood up very well against the Samba Stars, with Granit Xhaka and Valeron Behrami offering lots of protection in those defensive midfield positions.

Similarly, that is an area where Serbia are strong thanks to the presence of Nemanja Matic, with Aleksandar Mitrovic likely to run into a brick wall by playing as the lone forward.

A draw wouldn’t be a terrible outcome for either side, with Serbia most likely to try and force the issue later in the game although it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if we saw no goals scored in this clash.
