The Championship has long been touted as a division where “anyone can beat anyone”. While this is still true, the cream generally rises to the top come the end of the season, as could be seen from Newcastle and Brighton landing automatic promotion last term.

Similarly, teams like Huddersfield and Sheffield Wednesday found their way into the play-offs, with Reading the only surprising side to make the top six. It’s getting easier to forecast the teams who will challenge for promotion, especially with the relegated sides enjoying parachute payments for four seasons after dropping down.

One of those relegated teams is Middlesbrough, with the Teeside club struggling to play positively enough in the top flight after Aitor Karanka’s tactics had largely prospered in the Championship the previous season.

Karanka was axed with a few games to spare although owner Steve Gibson might have acted quicker and is now determined for his club to make an immediate return.

Garry Monk has recently been hired and arrives with a solid track record after spells with Swansea and Leeds. He will be armed with a big spending budget and the nucleus of the squad that were relegated are expected to stay put at the Riverside.

It won’t be plain sailing for Boro and there are other teams with similar aspirations next term. They include the likes of Aston Villa, Norwich, Fulham, Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County.

Villa are particularly interesting seeing as Steve Bruce has a reputation for guiding teams into the Premier League, while Fulham and Wednesday were top six material last term and the Owls will be hoping it is third time lucky after consecutive play-off disappointments.

Hull and Sunderland will also hope to put their parachute money to good effect but it’s hard to get away from Middlesbrough as the team most likely to challenge for promotion, especially considering Gibson’s bullish comments following relegation.
