England should edge out Slovenia on Tuesday although it might not be pretty

Gareth Southgate saw his England side beat Malta on Saturday night although a sterner task awaits them on Tuesday night when they head to Ljubljana.

The Three Lions won predictably comfortably against the Maltese thanks to first-half goals from Daniel Sturridge and Dele Alli, with Wayne Rooney playing a holding midfield role alongside Jordan Henderson.

Eric Dier is expected to partner Henderson for the next game, which means a shuffling of the pack and Rooney playing as part of the attacking trident. Jesse Lingard is the one expected to make way for his Manchester United team-mate.

It’s not ideal considering that the latter is commanding more game time for the Red Devils at the moment, although it should matter little in terms of the overall complexion.

England are fundamentally a better team than Slovenia and the biggest challenge will be trying to unlock a defence that stood firm when beating Slovakia on Saturday night by a 1-0 scoreline.

Can you name a player in the Slovenia team? The biggest star is goalkeeper Jan Oblak who is a regular for Atletico Madrid, with the experienced Bojan Jokic plying his trade for Villarreal, although Kevin Kampl has been branded a “deserter” after pulling out of the squad for this game.

The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder has seemingly left his country in the lurch, with the player citing exhaustion as his reason for not taking part.

Kampl said: “I would like to make some things clear. Firstly, I always play with pride and happiness for Slovenia and I intend to do so in the future.

“Secondly, I have made it clear I will be available next time, I just need some rest now. Thirdly, I swear that at the moment I am not in the right condition to help Slovenia”.

It’s a big boost for England who should be able to keep things tight at the back and this game looks like being either a 1-0 or a 2-0 win for the Three Lions.

The primary goal will be keeping a clean sheet and finding a breakthrough during the ninety minutes. There is enough attacking quality to manage this, even with Adam Lallana missing in action.
