Southampton have not won a Premier League game at St Mary’s since 26 November where they overcame Everton by a 4-1 scoreline.

Supporters might have thought better times were on their way, although the Saints have only taken twenty-eight points from their thirty-two top flight matches and they are scoring an average of less than a goal per game.

Mark Hughes has recently replaced Mauricio Pellegrini, although the Welshman has seen his team lose games at West Ham and Arsenal which means they are three points adrift in eighteenth place.

Hughes claimed he was encouraged by what he saw at the Emirates when losing 3-2, although this looks like a tough assignment against a Chelsea team who are looking to bounce back after a couple of disappointing home results.

The Blues led against Spurs before losing 3-1, while West Ham were able to secure a 1-1 draw at the Bridge and that means that the London side won’t be qualifying for the Champions League this season.

Motivation is a big factor with the Blues as their season looks set to fizzle out and the Saints will consider this a good time to be playing the fixture, with Shane Long and Charlie Austin both finding the net against Arsenal.

We think that Chelsea are opposable at the prices despite Southampton’s shortcomings and will happily take a punt on the draw along with a 1-1 scoreline which would be a big confidence boost for the home team.
