Claude Puel has a couple of tough acts to follow, with the Frenchman arriving at St Mary’s after Ronald Koeman decided to take up a new challenge at Goodison Park.

Mauricio Pochettino had previously punched above his weight with the Saints, with Puel having to cope with key departures in Sadio Mane and Graziano Pelle, although Nathan Redmond looks a decent acquisition.

Indeed, Southampton have a decent first XI and that includes Van Dijk and Fonte in central defence. Fraser Forster is a quality keeper between the sticks, with Dusan Tadic, Steven Davis and James Ward-Prowse all capable midfielders.

Indeed, Tadic could operate further forward this term and perhaps Southampton will have enough to get past a Watford side who have yet another new manager.

Walter Mazzarri is an unknown in these parts and has an erratic managerial track record, with Isaac Success, Christian Kabasele, Jerome Sinclair and Brice Dja Djedje among the new arrivals at Vicarage Road.

Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo remain a potentially potent strikeforce, although the Hornets might be on the back foot for much of this game and it’s worth noting that their form was relegation-like after a good start under Quique Sanchez Flores.

We think Watford will attempt to run a tight ship in this game and perhaps one goal for Southampton will be enough to claim the three points.
