If you play your cards right this weekend, you can pretend that you’re happy to miss watching the Saturday teatime match to earn some brownie points for Tottenham v Liverpool the following day.

After all, Southampton v West Brom is a fairly dull-looking fixture, even if the Saints were involved in a 2-2 draw against Newcastle last weekend. Mauricio Pellegrini’s side twice came from behind to land a point but it means they have only won one in five games at St Mary’s.

Tony Pulis will know this. He’ll also be confident about the Baggies’ chances of getting something from the game after a 1-1 draw at Leicester where Nacer Chadli gave Albion the lead on Monday before a Riyad Mahrez equaliser.

West Brom are a Manchester United-lite, with Pulis very much about safety-first and that explains why they have conceded just six goals in four away games.

Albion have only scored seven goals in eight games, while Southampton have managed five at home and just two on the road.

Pellegrini isn’t particularly an improvement on Puel thus far, with the former defensively-minded and being brought up in the school of a defensive Rafael Benitez.

While Manolo Gabbiadini scored twice against the Magpies, the Italian was previously firing blanks and we’re happy to keep things low here.
