The feature (if it can called that on what is a low-grade card) is the 7f handicap for three-year-olds (due off 7.40pm) and it’s a trappy contest too with none of the six runners easily discounted. That’s reflected in the betting of course and Kevin Ryan’s SWIFT APPROVAL is a ‘nice’ price as a result. Granted, his seasonal form figures of ‘9248’ don’t scream winner at first glance but, as tends to be the case, they don’t tell the full story.

His reappearance ninth at quirky Epsom (where he reportedly hung right) is easy to exuse and he quickly put that effort behind him when finishing second over this trip on his next start, only finding Outback Ruler too good. That’s a race he perhaps should have won as he was denied a clear run and the winner got first run on him as a result. It also didn’t help that he did most of his racing towards the seemingly unfavoured inside rail.

He seemed to find the drop back in trip to 6f against him when a staying on fourth at Pontefract and he was taking on much better company last time out at Chester, where he was scuppered by a wide draw and a hold-up ride in any case.

So, having established he’s better than his form figures suggest, he looks well worth an interest at the current xxx in a race with no standout performer and now reunited with Jamie Spencer, who does well on the stable runners.
