Australia were 2/5 to win the 2015 Ashes although the tourists looked like awful odds-on favourites in Cardiff, with the holders of the miniature urn being beaten with a day to spare.

The pitch at the SWALEC Stadium was prepared to counteract Mitchell Johnson, while England had some fortune to see century-maker Joe Root dropped on nought, although the home side outclassed their opponents in virtually every department to get over the line with something to spare.

So much for England getting a pasting in this series although the bookies are still prepared to lay Alastair Cook’s team for this week’s Lord’s match, with Boylesports going 2/1 about another victory for the home side.

Why are England available at such big odds?
Punters aren’t quite prepared to desert Australia who will come back stronger at HQ on Thursday, with Mitchell Starc expected to play despite a niggling ankle injury.

While the Aussies don’t have a good win record at Lord’s, they have players ready to make a big impact, with Johnson expected to have more joy on the Middlesex pitch, while Steve Smith can illustrate why he’s currently ranked as the number one batsman in the world.

Even so, in a three-horse race and with England’s bowlers having had the chance to rest for longer than anticipated, one can’t help but feel that the home side have lots of positives coming into the match.

Mark Wood’s emergence is great for the English bowling attack, while Moeen Ali was underrated by the Baggy Greens in the first Test and claimed a quarter of the Aussie wickets while he’s also a dab hand with the bat.

Ben Stokes has slotted seamlessly into the team, with Root fast becoming a superstar with the willow and claiming a couple of bonus wickets towards the end of the match to land his Man of the Match award.

Australia are 7/5 and will be determined to right the wrongs of the First Test in Cardiff, with the pitch not to their liking. Mitch Marsh is likely to replace Shane Watson and Peter Siddle will wait in the wings should Starc not be available to play.

The good batting track could lead to a draw which is trading at 13/5 although we’ll stick with England to get the job done and get even closer to reclaiming the Ashes.
