Steve McClaren breathed a sigh of relief after his Newcastle team beat Liverpool last weekend, with the Magpies now only in the relegation zone on goal difference.

However, one swallow does not a summer maketh, with the Magpies only having thirteen points on the board from fifteen games played. The bottom line is that they have lost five of their seven games on the road and conceded eighteen goals.

Their last road trip saw Newcastle get pistol-whipped at Selhurst Park where Crystal Palace won by a 5-1 scoreline and it’s hard to see how McClaren can change his team’s defensive ways so quickly.

A solid backs-to-the-wall display at home to Liverpool is one thing although they now have to tame a Tottenham team who are unbeaten at White Hart Lane, even of half of Spurs’ eight home matches have ended in a draw.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were thwarted by Chelsea in their last game at the Lane, although they wiped the floor with West Ham previously to that and we expect them to be comfortable winners in this match.

Harry Kane is a hotshot who can torment the Newcastle defence, with Dele Alli enjoying a breakthrough season and the defence is looking better than it’s done in years thanks partly to the recruitment of Toby Alderweireld during the summer.

We’re going to take Tottenham on the handicap market and expect them to win by at least two goals. It might be more, with Newcastle having lost 3-0 at Sunderland and 6-1 at Manchester City, illustrating that their heads tend to drop after conceding a goal.
