I will be at my local track this afternoon and I’m hopeful the following horses will help pay for the day out – and with some added interest!

Both the handicap chases at the Midlands venue have attracted decent sized fields and the 2m6f contest, which is for novices, has the biggest field of all with 12 set to go to post. Several need considering and should pay their way this winter, but the one that strikes me most as the potential winner is the Paul Nicholls-trained ROCK ON OSCAR.

The seven-year-old might not look as well treated as some of these as he has top weight to carry, but his actual rating of 135 doesn’t look harsh by any means when you consider that the two horses he split when second on his chase debut in May of 2016 are now rated in the high 140s.

As a winner of his sole start in an Irish point-to-point, he who would have been bidding his time over hurdles, albeit he still managed to win two of his six starts in that sphere, and is every inch a 3m chaser. He’s certainly in the right hands to fulfil his potential and I’ll be surprised if he can’t rate a good deal higher.

One potential negative is his absence of 530 days and it will be interesting to see how the market reacts. But the stable runners don’t usually fail through lack of fitness and Nicholls, who is solely represented by the selection this afternoon, is operating on a 30% strike rate (9-30) in the last fortnight, with four of those winners coming at Chepstow last weekend.

He is the mount of Sam Twiston-Davies, who is here for just the one ride (a tip in itself), and unless he’s a big drifter from the current 9/1, which would suggest he’s in need of the run, he’ll be carrying my cash.
