It’s Monday and therefore it must be Windsor this evening, with a six-pack card starting at 6.00pm.

Heavy rain has turned the going at the Berkshire venue to a very un-summer like “good to soft” and it could pay to be wary of those horses who have even making hay on the fast ground.

Applying that to the 6f handicap for fillies (due off 7.00pm) and it could be worth taking on Richard Hannon’s Paint The Star, who seemed to relish a fast surface when winning at Pontefract last month and has never raced on ground this soft. She’s also up 5lb for winning what was a weak four-runner race and this is tougher.

She’s disputing favouritism with QUITE A STORY and Clive Cox’s filly looks the one to be on. It’s true she also won on fast ground last time, confirming the promise she had shown when runner-up at Bath on her debut, but her trainer made a point of saying in a recent stable interview that she wouldn’t want the ground too quick. He also described her handicap mark of 70 as being “workable” and there’s every chance this half-sister to Perfect Cracker, a seven-time winner for the stable, can keep on improving.

Favourites have won the last three runnings of this race and two of those were three-year-olds, so the selection would hardly be bucking a trend in that respect and the current 4/1 on offer looks a shade generous.
