It’s been an emotionally-charged week for Liverpool FC and the first-team squad head to Spain hoping to secure a Europa League victory for the ninety-six fans who were ruled to have been unlawfully killed twenty-seven years ago.

Jurgen Klopp’s side produced the most fantastic comeback against Borussia Dortmund in the previous round, with the Reds drawing on the positive energy of the fans to qualify at the expense of a talented side who had crafted a winning position.

Now a different type of assignment lies in wait. It’s easy to dismiss Villarreal as inferior to Dortmund and they probably are, although the Spanish side do sit fourth in La Liga and their form at El Madrigal has been impressive this term.

The Yellow Submarine have only lost two of their eighteen home matches this season, while they have knocked out Napoli, Bayer Leverkusen and Sparta Prague to reach the semi-finals.

Villarreal have a tight defence in front of their own fans and Liverpool might be hard-pressed to find a way of scoring a vital away goal, with Marcelino Garcia Toral aware that a goalless draw would not be the worst outcome.

Indeed, Liverpool have got plenty of attacking options in the form of Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana, although they are clearly slacker from a defensive point-of-view.

Kolo Toure looks set to be the preferred option alongside Dejan Lovren, with Cedric Bakambu the danger man for Villarreal and he will be flanked by Tottenham reject Roberto Soldado.

Ultimately, both sides will want to remain in the tie and Villarreal will look to sneak a 1-0 and give them a chance of going through at Anfield simply by scoring a goal and defending for their lives.

However, Klopp will want parity as was achieved at the Westfalenstadion and that outcome is the likeliest of all.
