Walsall finished ten points ahead of Barnsley this season although the Midlands side were unable to make an impact in a first leg at Oakwell which saw the Tykes claim a 3-0 victory.

Saddlers boss Jon Whitney has admitted that his team need a “colossal performance” to stand any chance of reaching the League One play-off final, with at least three goals needing to be scored during normal time.

“It makes it such an uphill task but it’s one which we can climb and I truly believe that,” Whitney told BBC Sport.

“But I need to know the players believe that. We need a colossal performance. But it’s no good in me having this belief and incredible optimism if they don’t have it.”

Walsall have managed some big wins this season, including the final game of the regular season where they claimed a 5-0 victory at Vale Park. However, Port Vale were at half-pace and it should be noted that Barnsley won 4-1 at champions Wigan on the same day.

Sam Winnall was the chief henchman on Saturday, with the former Scunthorpe striker continuing his prolific ways by bagging a brace and then setting up a third for his team.

Barnsley could easily have been automatic promotion contenders if they hadn’t suffered such a slow start and it’s implausible to think they will let a three-goal lead slip here.

Walsall could well get among the goals but keeping them out at the other end could be problematic and a high-scoring encounter could be on the cards.

We’re even happy to have a shout on Over 3.5 Goals when you have forwards with the calibre of Tom Bradshaw and Winnall, with sparks set to fly although the visiting supporters will be the ones celebrating.
