Watford have had plenty of false dawns when it comes to getting promoted from the Championship, especially that play-off adventure two seasons ago when Leicester were beaten in dramatic fashion only for Crystal Palace to beat them at Wembley.

However, with two games remaining, the Hornets are in the box seat to be promoted, with a tense 1-0 win against Birmingham City taking them clear of their promotion rivals.

A trip to Brighton followed by a home match against Sheffield Wednesday are all that stand between Slaviša Jokanović’s side and the promised land, with Bournemouth, Norwich and Middlesbrough the other teams in contention for automatic promotion.

The Cherries occupy second spot after a 2-2 draw with Wednesday which saw the Owls score a last-minute penalty, although Eddie Howe’s team are still min a great position to fend off the Canaries and Boro.

A home match against Bolton is followed by a potential promotion party at The Valley, with Middlesbrough on the same points but with a massively inferior goal difference.

Boro are in the mix after a 1-0 win at Norwich City although they must almost certainly win their remaining matches and hope for a slip from Watford or Bournemouth if they are to avoid the lottery of the play-offs.

Wins are gettable against Fulham and Brighton, although odds of 8/11 about them getting promoted suggests that play-offs are the best that Aitor Karanka’s team can hope for.

Indeed, the Championship promotion odds are interesting, with Derby a 3/1 shot to go up despite the fact that the Rams are virtually certain to be in the play-offs.

Steve McClaren’s team might have gone off the boil although their odds will surely contract and you could do worse than back Derby and Ipswich at 6/1 to get promoted.
