It’s been an opening Premier League weekend full of surprises, with Chelsea being held at home to Swansea City before Arsenal were beaten at home to West Ham.

Manchester City therefore have an ideal opportunity to steal an early march on their rivals by winning at The Hawthorns this evening, although it could be a tricky assignment for a team who finished second in the standings last term.

Manuel Pellegrini is likely to leave chief marksman Sergio Aguero on the bench, with Wilfried Bony operating in attack and being flanked by Samir Nasri, David Silva and Raheem Sterling.

However, the team’s defensive capabilities is under the microscope, with City having conceded four goals against both Real Madrid and Stuttgart in pre-season friendly matches.

While we perhaps shouldn’t read too much into these games, the bottom line is that Eliaquim Mangala continues to be unproven in the top flight after a difficult first season which saw the Frenchman culpable on a number of occasions.

West Brom will regard this as a bonus fixture, with James Chester set to make his bow in the centre of defence, while Rickie Lambert will be itching to get off the mark and is likely to partner Saido Berahino.

The Baggies finished 13th last season after Alan Irvine got off to a poor start with the West Midlands team before Pulis came in and got the defence keeping more clean sheets.

West Brom ended the season with just one defeat in their final six games and Pulis had a habit of doing well against the big teams when manager of Stoke, with Albion likely to set up in a bid to nullify top quality opposition.
