The fanfare surrounding Dutch coach Dick Advocaat’s arrival as Sunderland saviour looks set to continue, but the 67-year-old’s recent history of club bow blues does not bode well for the Black Cats.

West Ham United will welcome strugglers Sunderland to Upton Park, where Advocaat will take over the reins hoping for a puuurrrfect first Premier League match.

However, the Teesside team may do well to temper their expectations considering Advocaat’s tendency towards debut jinxes.

Despite a glittering CV that boasts a UEFA Cup, Eredivisie title and back-to-back Scottish Premier Leagues, intriguing Advocaat is a notoriously slow starter.

The Hague-born tactician has tasted just one triumph on league debuts during his last six appointments at five different clubs, which makes the Hammers odds-on 17/20 favourites for a home win with William Hill.

This lacklustre list of disappointing maiden bows includes illustrious clubs Rangers, Borussia Monchengladbach, Zenit St Petersburg, Dutch club AZ Alkmaar (with whom he enjoyed a double stint) and a troubled term at PSV Eindhoven (second time around).

To compound the Black Cats’ concerns ahead of the trip to Upton Park, Advocaat never won a league debut away from home with those clubs, so Sky Bet have priced relegation-threatened Sunderland up at 13/5 to draw.

Hammers dangerman Diafra Sakho is the most likely to spoil the party, and the Senegal sharpshooter is a best market price of 5/1 with Coral to fire home first.

Superb Sakho’s pace, power and timing should really trouble the Black Cats’ backline before Advocaat has truly had time to tinker, and his boisterous strike partner Enner Valencia is also 13/8 with Bet365 to net anytime.

West Ham have lost just once to the north east outfit in their past five match-ups, and shut Sunderland out on their last trip to east London, so are 2/1 with Coral to keep a clean sheet.

Should Advocaat actually prove to be a lucky charm for the Black Cats, the visitors are 7/2 to take all three points and begin their great escape from the trap door tussle in earnest.
