Liverpool ended 2015 with a flourish after successive wins over Leicester and West Ham. The performances can be filed in the “pragmatic” category rather than anything to write home about, although Jurgen Klopp will be satisfied that the Reds are just five points off the top four.

Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho are proving to be robust at the back in the absence of Martin Skrtel, while Philippe Coutinho is back in the team and Liverpool are much better with their Brazilian pulling the strings.

However, the Merseyside team have experienced problems breaking down stubborn opposition recently and West Ham will be happy to claim a point from this fixture.

Slaven Bilic has been a touch unfortunate with injuries although Dimitri Payet could be in the squad for this game and the Hammers were so much better earlier in the campaign with the match-winning Frenchman.

West Ham sit eighth and just a point behind their opponents after coming from behind to beat Southampton last time out, although they had previously been involved in five low-scoring draws and the same could occur here.

James Tomkins and James Collins are solid central defenders who can repel Christian Benteke and the other Liverpool attacking players, while Cheikhou Kouyate will be required to break up the opposition play.

It won’t be an adventurous approach from the Hammers who are unbeaten in their last six games and it’s likely to extend to seven. This safety-first approach ultimately keeps them well clear of danger after amassing a nice haul of points thus far.
