The feature race at Wincanton is the Dick Hunt Handicap Chase over 2m4f (3.40pm) and a first prize of £13,763 has ensured a decent turnout, with the majority of the 11 runner field holding decent claims. Bookmakers have settled on last week’s easy Warwick winner (3m1/2f) As De Fer as favourite and it’s easy to see why as he slammed his rivals by 26 lengths or more and runs here under a 7lb penalty, which is largely nullified by David Noonan’s claim. However, the ten-year-old has struggled for consistency in the past and, at the odds, he’s opposable in what is a much better race and over a trip possibly shorter than ideal.

Let’s take him on with the Colin Tizzard-trained QUITE BY CHANCE who is seeking a course hat-trick, with his latest victory coming over this trip and in the same grade two weeks ago. The seven-year-old has been raised to a career-high mark of 129 as a result, but he is clearly improving and gets on well with 7lb claimer Paul O’Brien, who has been on board for his last two wins. His in-form trainer, writing in a recent Stable Tour, described him as a ‘quietly progressive’ horse who he believes is capable of getting to a mark of at least 140 in time, so you have to think he can be very competitive this afternoon.
