At this stage of the season it pays to listen (or read) what trainers are saying as recent form is thin on the ground and you’re guessing over the fitness of several runners. So, I’m making no excuses for using Dean Ivory’s recent Stable Tour as a source for the day’s second bet, SECRET BIRD, who is running in the 6f handicap run later on the Windsor card (7.50pm).

He wrote: ‘He came to us from Darley, where he clearly had issues, but after a lot of time and patience we got him out last April and he won on his fourth run at Windsor in September off 58. He starts this season 5lb higher and I’m sure he’ll need competitive. He’ll make his return back at Windsor and I expect him to go well as his work has been good and he wouldn’t need the run as much as many.’

It’s a competitive race this afternoon and several of his rivals are for from the all-weather. Not many, though, have form on the prevailing ground and that can’t be said of the selection who finished runner-up on heavy at Chepstow last August under today’s pilot Robert Winston, who was also on board for his win here. The partnership must have solid each-way claims at the available 14/1.
