It could be a good evening for owner Khalid Abdullah, whose Buffer Zone is strongly fancied, as he has double prospects with the Amanda Perrett-trained DESERT PATH, who faces just five rivals in the 1m3f99y handicap.

The three-year-old was very impressive when scoring by four and a half lengths over slightly shorter here on his reappearance in May, having shown promise on a couple of novice starts at two and having been gelded in the meantime.

That qualified him for a mark of 86 and it was put to the test in quite a decent class 3 handicap at Sandown won by Corgi, who so nearly followed up at Royal Ascot last week. The selection could only finish sixth of the seven runners on that occasion but he never really got a clear run of things, having been trapped on the rail in behind the weakening leader, and the tactical nature of the race didn’t suit him anyway.

He therefore has to be worth another chance now dropping back down in grade and having also been dropped 4lb by the handicapper, which means he just gets in this class 4 off top weight. Robert Havlin, who rode him into fourth at Kempton last October, takes over the reigns.
