Charlie Appleby’s Alqamar has been put in as favourite for the 1m6f handicap and that’s understandable as he has a progressive profile and is weighted to turn the tables on Great Hall, who beat him half a length at Ascot last time. However, I’m not sure he’s one to trust as he didn’t find much for pressure on that occasion and it wouldn’t surprise to see him being out-battled this afternoon.

He has to be taken on and I like John Gosden’s ZENON most of his seven rivals. The son of Galileo looked a stayer going places when impressively winning his maiden at Chepstow in June and then when following up on his handicap debut at Haydock later that month, despite losing ground when slipping up on the bend turning for home (traded at 1000 in-running). That performance was enough to earn him a St Leger entry.

That looked fanciful, though, after his subsequent defeats at Chester and Goodwood where he trailed in last of the five runners. However, neither of those tracks would have suited as he’s a very big horse with a giant stride and he should be far more at home on today’s more galloping terrain with the forecast cut in the ground also what he needs. A pair of first-time blinkers and the presence of Ryan Moore on his back help clinch the bet.
