The last seven runnings of his sales race have been won by just three trainers – Kevin Ryan (2011 and 2012), William Haggas (2013 to 2015) and Richard Hannon (the last two editions) – and that trio are responsible for seven of the 20 runners. Hannon has four of those and the best of those, at least according to the betting and jockey bookings, is He’Zanarab, a winner over this course and distance (good to soft) when last seen out and the mount of Ryan Moore. However, he has faster ground to contend with here and finished well beaten on good to firm here previously, while he also has a small penalty to contend with.

His stablemate Masaru, an easy winner on his Windsor debut and highly regarded judging by a raft of Group race entries later in the season, has to be respected. But he may lack the experience to cope with a big field like this, which also applies to a few other fancied runners, and I’d much rather have a few quid on the more battle-hardened KODYANNA.

While it was only a 5f nursery that Richard Fahey’s filly won here in July, she was a Listed winner back in June and improved again for the step up to 6f when finishing second in a Group 3 at Deauville last time. Rated 100 off the back of that, she is officially the best runner in the field and while plenty of her rivals are open to improvement, her experience will count for plenty. Fahey is also leaving nothing to chance in what is a hugely valuable contest by applying cheekpieces for the first time.
