John Gosden’s Cracksman sets the form standard on his close third in the Derby and a subsequent second in the Irish equivalent. His main target is now the St Leger and he deserves to be favourite for this recognised trial, albeit I’m reluctant to support him at a shade of odds-on. For all his class, he does lack a change of gear and should this turn into a sprint, he could be found wanting again.

Sir Michael Stoute’s Mirage Dancer is next in the betting at around the 5/1 market following two smart efforts in defeat this season, including a Royal Ascot third over 1m2f last time. The way he was keeping on suggests he is worth a try over this far, although he’s not a certain stayer on breeding – he’s by Frankel out of a mare who won up to 1m1f – and he’s untried on ground slower than good (assuming the forecast rain materialises).

Aidan O’Brien’s VENICE BEACH won’t mind any juice in the ground and he has a leading form chance on his defeat of subsequent Derby winner Wings Of Eagles at Chester in May and a close third in a French Group 1 over this trip last time. He clearly didn’t give his true running when finishing well adrift of his stablemate and Cracksman at Epsom in between and he might have more improvement in him over staying trips, with the Leger (20/1 with bet365) on his agenda. I can see him running well in the Classic and I can definitely see him having a big say in this Group 2 with Ryan Moore doing the pushing. bet365’s 10/1 is solid each-way value and I just hope all eight stand their ground to ensure three places.
