Bournemouth have scored as many goals in the league in Birmingham so far this season as Aston Villa, a statistic which makes us think that a slight upset may be on the cards this weekend.
Would a Bournemouth win really be an upset though? Only six places separate the two teams and Bournemouth are still flying high in the Championship with Aston Villa languishing in the bottom half of the table, a mere three points above the relegation zone.
Indeed, Bournemouth’s last visit to England’s second city resulted in an emphatic 8-0 win over Birmingham City at St Andrews and while we don’t for a second predict that another such scoreline is on the cards on Sunday, we would be surprised if the home side remained in this competition after the weekend.
The Cherries have performed well above even the most optimistic fan’s expectations and a 1-0 defeat to Leeds United at Elland Road last weekend will hardly have dented confidence at all. Indeed, we’re somewhat surprised to see the visitors on offer at 21/10 to win this weekend and we’ll be gratefully accepting this price.
Let’s not forget however that Villa are a Premier League club and they will provide tough opposition for Bournemouth. Nevertheless the fact remains that the Midlands club are currently the lowest scorers in any major European competition and we feel that this statistic will remain intact.
Villa’s lacklustre defence will be up against the free-scoring top club in the Championship and Eddie Howe’s men can already boast some 54 goals so far, the Villans managing just eleven league goals to date.
We don’t exactly wee where a Villa goal will come from this weekend. Bournemouth haven’t recorded many clean sheets this term, however Villa are far from a free-scoring side and we feel that a Bournemouth win will also see a clean sheet for the visitors.
