Atletico Madrid suffered a shock defeat to Olympiakos in their opening Champions League encounter. Will they suffer the same fate at home on Wednesday?
Atletico responded to their 3-2 defeat to the Greek side with three back-to-back wins, soaring to the top of the Group A table and looking certain to go through to the knockout stages of the competition.
Olympiakos enjoyed a thoroughly deserved victory in that opening encounter however and the Greek side will be desperate to repeat that outcome in the Spanish capital on Wednesday evening. Atletico’s two goals in that match came courtesy of Antoine Greizmann and Mario Mandzukic, the duo largely responsible for their side’s comeback in the competition following that early disappointment.
Indeed, Diego Simeone’s side have kept clean sheets in their last three European matches and although this group is still wide open, a victory by two goals or more for the Spanish champions would be enough to secure a passage into the last sixteen.
As such, Simeone will be eager to clinch the required win on Wednesday against a side who are far from their best on the road, the Greeks winning at home to Juventus and Atletico but suffering defeat in their two away games, the 2-0 defeat to Malmo being particularly galling.
Nevertheless, we feel that Olympiakos can cause a few problems in the Spanish capital this week. Juventus were on the back foot for much of the game in Italy, trailing 2-1 before a late comeback turned the tables on the Greek side. When one considers that Juve have an impressive record at home, this was a decent effort from Michel’s side and although we fully expect Atletico to win at the final whistle, Olympiakos will almost certainly get themselves onto the scoresheet. As such, we’re backing an Atletico win and both teams to score at 3/1 with Coral.
