Portuguese side FC Porto travel to Switzerland on Wednesday for their first leg second-round clash with Basel. Will they manage their fifth successive win?
Porto are embroiled in the usual title challenge with arch rivals Sporting Lisbon and Benfica and currently sit second in the Portuguese top tier.
In this competition, the side’s progress has been relatively straightforward. They finished the group stage with eighteen points and they start this match as firm favourites at 7/5.
Basel are having things very much their own way in the Swiss league, sitting eight points above Young Boys in second place. They come into this match on the back of a nine-game unbeaten run and they will certainly pose Porto no end of problems on Wednesday evening.
Indeed, Basel have also enjoyed an excellent run in the Champions League. They opened their campaign with a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid, however they bounced back with home wins against Ludogorets and Liverpool and will be confident of winning the first leg of this tie at odds of 12/5.
Both Porto and Basel possess a wealth of firepower, the Portuguese side managing sixteen goals in the group stages and 12 goals in their last four league matches. Jackson Martinez is the undoubted star in the Porto ranks, the Colombian marksman scoring no less than 24 goals this season in all competitions. As such, we’ll be backing him at 9/5 to find the back of the net in this match.
Basel are no mugs however and they too will be likely to get their names onto the scoresheet. The side are completely dominating their domestic league and to be honest we’re rather surprised to see them priced as high to win this game.
Saying that, there’s not too much to separate these sides and we’re having trouble deciding on a winner, therefore we’re sticking to the goal market as opposed to the winners market for this clash.
