Bayer Leverkusen look set to confirm their passage through to the last sixteen of the Champions League with a victory over Monaco at the BayArena on Wednesday evening.
The German side lost their opening Champions League match to Monaco, however they have recovered well since that setback with three wins in their last three games in the competition including successive wins against Zenit St Petersburg.
Rodger Schmidt’s side are seeking another top four finish in the Bundesliga and as things stand they could well achieve that aim, sitting currently in fourth spot in the table. They occupy top spot in Group C and can afford a certain amount of relaxation, knowing that even a draw would effectively see them safely through to the second round. Nevertheless, they will be eager for a win and we feel that this will be achieved, BetVictor offering 7/10 for such an outcome, the draw up for grabs at odds of 10/3 at Betfred.
Monaco occupy second place in the group, however they have managed just two points since their opening victory over Bayer and a win will be desperately needed to ensure that they stay in contention.
It must be said that they have had a poor season in Ligue 1 so far, financial constraints forcing the side to dispense with the services of some key players such as Falcao and James Rodriguez. They sit eighth in the league table and will be in low spirits coming into this match.
Monaco’s Champions League outings have been low scoring affairs, only two goals being managed by either team in all of their four games to date in the competition. Bayer have been involved in higher scoring matches, however Monaco will be expected to play a defensive game and will be looking to frustrate the home side. As such, we’ll be backing under 2.5 goals on this occasion, Betfair offering Evens for such an outcome.
We expect the hosts to find a way through nevertheless. They boast a wealth of talent including Stefan Kiessling in attack and Heung Min-Son, the latter the side’s top scorer and certain to be looking to add to his tally for the season.
Schalke, Mainz and Zenit have failed to penetrate the Bayer defence so far this term and we feel they will manage a clean sheet at the BayArena on Wednesday, a home win-to-nil up for grabs at 9/5 with Coral, a price which we’ll be taking.
