A massive night ahead is in prospect for two English clubs this evening
The Champions League resumes tonight and the heat is on for two English clubs seeking to advance from the group stages of the competition.
Liverpool secured their place in this season’s Champions League thanks to a second place finish in last season’s Premier League, however their stay in the competition looks set to be an extremely brief affair unless they can record a huge turnaround in the remaining matches.
Such a return to form is unlikely tonight against reigning champions Real Madrid, the Spanish giants comfortably overcoming the Reds at Anfield last month and looking fairly certain to send them home pointless this evening at the Bernabeu.
Real gave Liverpool a masterclass in total football at Anfield last month, going home with a 3-0 win under their belts. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring and Karim Benzema sealed the three points with an emphatic display which included the second and third goals.
Unsurprisingly, Real top their group with a full nine points from their opening three outings and things look set for another footballing lesson from the European champions this evening, BetVictor amongst the bookies offering 1/4 for a home win, a draw up for grabs at 11/1 with Bet365.
The other Group B clash sees Ludogorets Razgrad travel to FC Basel, the winner of this match clinching the points required to occupy second place in the table behind runaway leaders Real.
Arsenal have a massive night in Group D and the Gunners know that another victory against Belgian side Anderlecht could send them into the last sixteen of the competition. Arsenal opened their campaign with a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund, however they responded to that result with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Galatasaray and a hard-fought win over Anderlecht in Belgium, Bet365 offering 4/11 that the Gunners seal the required win tonight which will likely see them through to the knockout stages of the competition if Borussia Dortmund defeat Galatasaray as expected in the other Group D encounter ( Dortmund 1/4 William Hill, 11/1 Galatasaray, 9/2 draw )
Juventus will be eager to get things back on track when they face Olympiakos at home in Group A ( Juventus 1/3 Ladbrokes, Olympiakos 9/1, draw 15/4 . The Serie A champions were beaten by the Greek side in the reverse fixture last month and sit three points adrift of Olympiakos and Atletico Madrid going into this match. A victory would send them back into contention with Atletico looking to move closer to the knockout stages with an away win at Malmo ( Atletico 1/3, Draw 4/1, Malmo 8/1 Paddy Power ).
Group C sees Bayer Leverkusen head to Zenit St Petersburg hoping for a win which would see them cement their position at the top of the table ( Zenit 29/20, Draw 5/2, Bayer 2/1 Bet365 ) Monaco and Benfica clash in the remaining Group C match, this match effectively a six-pointer ( Benfica 17/20, Draw 23/10, Monaco 7/2 Ladbrokes ).
