The Real Madrid juggernaut continues unabated in the Champions League. Can the reigning champions make it five wins from five?
Reigning Swiss champions Basel have a daunting task on their hands when they face Real Madrid tomorrow evening, the home side desperate for a win which would effectively see them through to the last sixteen of the Champions League.
Is such a win possible against the might of Real? The Basel faithful will be optimistic that home advantage may play a part in this encounter, however St. Jakob-Park will hold little which can intimidate Ronaldo and co and Basel may have to wait slightly longer to find out their future in this season’s competition, a home win extremely unlikely on Wednesday.
The Spanish giants come into this match on the back of an impressive 15 game winning run, the reverse fixture against Basel in September resulting in a victory at the Bernabeu which sparked off their incredible run. This followed a 2-1 defeat to city rivals Atletico Madrid, a result which could easily have cost manager Carlo Ancelotti his job.
At this early stage of the season, Real appeared to be losing their way, the loss of Angel Di Maria to Manchester United and Xabi Alonso to Bayern Munich seemingly too much for the team to cope with. This however proved to be a short-term blip and Real are back to their all-conquering ways.
Real have been running riot in all competitions since then, beating basel 5-1 with Toni Kroos, Raphael Varane and Luka Modric all getting in on the act. This result was followed by a 3-1 triumph over Barcelona in the El Clasico and a 3-0 demolition job against Liverpool at Anfield.
Turning to domestic action, Real recorded a fine 4-0 win over Eibar last weekend with goals coming from Karim Benzema, James Rodriguez and a brace for Cristiano Ronaldo, taking his tally to 27.
Basel have been performing reasonably well in the competition and followed that defeat to Real with a win against Liverpool. Following a 1-0 defeat to Ludogorets, they responded in style with a 4-0 win against the same team in the reverse fixture in Switzerland.
Sitting at the top of the Swiss Super League, Basel are no pushovers, thrashing FC Aarau 3-0 at the week, midfielder Shkelzen Gashi scoring two with a late tsrike from Breel Embolo. With four straight wins and 13 goals to their name, Real will afford them all the respect they deserve.
In reality, the visitors will be too strong for the Swiss champions, however this match should prove a little closer than some of Real’s conquests of late. Nevertheless, we feel that Real will close up at the back and we’ll be backing a win-to-nil for the Spaniards. Ronaldo will be the one to watch and the 14/5 available at Betfair for the Portuguese hitman to break the deadlock looks too good to ignore.
