With five wins out of six, Arsenal will be the ones leaving Anfield with three points this weekend.
Liverpool are in the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup thanks to a midweek 3-1 victory over Championship high-flyers AFC Bournemouth, however this is in no way indicative of a turnaround in fortunes for the Reds and another Premier League defeat is very much on the cards at Anfield this weekend.
Brendan Rodgers’ side have been true to form recently, winning against Crystal Palace at Selhurst park and losing to Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend. The form book will be followed this time around with a Gunners victory on Merseyside.
Arsenal have traditionally had a decent record at Anfield, apart from their 5-1 thrashing last season, a match which signalled the start Liverpool’s surge to the top of the table as well as the end of the Gunners’ title challenge.
The tables will be turned this time, although perhaps not quite so emphatically. Liverpool are a completely different animal to last season, the departure of Luis Suarez and the absence through injury of Daniel Sturridge resulting in an Arsenal win looking extremely likely.
Arsenal haven’t had things entirely their own way recently, however with triumphs in all but one of their last six matches we feel that they can be trusted to do the business on Merseyside on Sunday afternoon.
Indeed, the Gunners have been on top form in more than one competition, defeating Galatasaray comprehensively 4-1 in Turkey and hammering Newcastle United by the same scoreline last weekend in the Premier League. The fact that they have scored eight goals in two matches whilst conceding only two will lift team spirits and they will be in confident mood heading to Anfield this weekend.
Wenger will continue using his star strikers, Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck certain to cause the home rearguard no end of problems at the back. We would perhaps have enjoyed a meatier price, however 13/8 for a Gunners win is decent enough against a Reds side who fully deserve their position in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
