Have Liverpool managed to turn their season around? Wins against Leicester City and Stoke would point towards a 'Yes', however a win against Sunderland is desperately needed this weekend.
Two results against relatively poor teams don’t signal a turnaround, however the signs of a slow recovery may be there and Brendan Rodgers will be a relieved man should his Reds side record a third successive victory at home to Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.
It has been a rather difficult month for Rodgers. The Anfield faithful were hopeful of Liverpool going one better than last season and actually winning their first ever Premier League title this time around. Things haven’t quite worked out that way so far, the Reds some 16 points adrift of leaders Chelsea as things stand.
The Merseyside club have disappointed in the Champions League and Brendan Rodgers has had to fend off calls for his dismissal. As such, he will have been somewhat relieved to see the three points secured at Leicester’s King Power Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The pressure will remain for this clash however, the supporters demanding nothing less than total victory against the Black Cats. Sunderland haven’t recorded a single win in their last four outings, following up three back-to-back draws with a 4-1 thumping at the hands of Manchester City on Wednesday evening.
As such, we aren’t exactly surprised to see the hosts start this match as 8/15 favourites at Paddy Power. Liverpool should clinch the required win, however we will be seeking better value elsewhere.
We’re immediately attracted by Coral’s 6/4 for a Liverpool win-to-nil. Sunderland are far from free-scoring this season and we don’t fancy them to penetrate the home defence, despite that fact that Liverpool have been far from solid at the back so far this term, conceding in all but two of their last eleven matches. Sunderland haven only scored in three of their last eight matches, welcome news for the home rearguard who will be desperately seeking the all elusive clean sheet.
An interesting Anytime Goalscorer option could be Jordan henderson at 9/2 with Betfred, the player netting his second goal in three appearances in the win at Leicester City. Nevertheless we feel that the best bet is simply to back the home side to win this match without conceding. They should easily manage to completely shut-out Sunderland and clinch their third successive win in the Premier League, lifting their spirits for a tricky clash at Old Trafford the following weekend.
