Newcastle are way too big at 29/10 with Liverpool still missing Daniel Sturridge
Liverpool might have finished two points behind champions Manchester City last season although Brendan Rodgers’ team look as though they will struggle to make the top four of the Premier League table this term.
Luis Suarez’s departure has left a gaping hole in attack, with Daniel Sturridge’s injury leading to Fabio Borini, Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert trying to play their way into the manager’s thoughts.
Defensively, the Reds aren’t keeping too many clean sheets and while they managed to shut out Hull City last weekend, this was at the expense of failing to score at the other end.
In short, Liverpool shouldn’t be even money to win at St James’ Park against a side that claimed a deserved 2-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium, with Newcastle a 10/1 chance to win that particular match.
The bookies clearly anticipate taking more money on the visitors than the home side although Alan Pardew’s team can’t be passed up at 29/10 to claim a fourth straight victory in all competitions, having beaten Leicester and Tottenham in their last two Premier League games.
Pardew actually rested some players for the win against City including goalkeeper Tim Krul and striker Papiss Cisse, with the team bulging with confidence against a side for whom Mario Balotelli still hasn’t scored a Premier League goal.
“I do know what I’m doing,” Pardew said after winning at the Etihad. “I think I’ve had most of the scalps as Newcastle manager, maybe except Arsenal, and I look forward to playing them.
Pardew had special words for the returning Ryan Taylor and the former Tranmere man will be like having a new player, with his boss saying: “Taylor was a kind of story you’d read in some football magazine that was made up. He was outstanding in his first game after all that time. Brilliant.”
