Sunderland have traditionally been dominant in the Tyne-Wear derby match in recent years and are worth backing to continue that dominance on Sunday afternoon.
Sunderland have won their last three derby matches against bitter rivals Newcastle United and have avoided defeat in the last five. Nevertheless they start this match as outsiders, Coral offering a price of 16/5 for a Sunderland win, odds which we really can’t ignore.
The Black Cats have been specialising in draws this season, all but one of their last six outings ending in stalemate, the notable exception being the 4-1 thrashing to Manchester City at the Stadium of Light.
The obvious problem for Gus Poyet’s side has been scoring goals and they have struggled to hit the back of the net all season with the exception of victories against Crystal Palace and Stoke City.
Poyet desperately needs a goal poacher in his squad and whilst he possesses some decent players up front such as Connor Wickham, Jozy Altidore and Steven Fletcher, there is really no-one there who can create a regular goal threat.
Saying that, the Wearsiders have been extremely solid in defence, a fact ably demonstrated when they held leaders Chelsea to a goal-less draw at home recently. As such, they will be confident that they can keep the Newcastle attack at bay and manage a goal or two at the other end.
Newcastle have seen a huge amount of improvement of late, however they were thrashed 4-1 by Arsenal in the Premier League and 4-0 by Tottenham in the Capital One Cup quarter-finals, results which suggest that things aren’t all going Pardew’s way.
As such, we believe that Newcastle will be in low spirits coming into this match and this, coupled with Sunderland’s traditional dominance of this fixture will tip the balance towards the Wearsiders. The Black Cats will be the ones enjoying local bragging rights on Sunday afternoon.
