Bayern Munich will be looking for an advantage from their first leg tie in Ukraine this evening. Can Donetsk stand in their way?
The Ukrainian side won’t be enjoying home comforts in this match thanks to the much publicised troubles in this part of Europe. Instead the match has been moved to the west of the country and the city of Lviv.
Indeed, Shakhtar’s Donbass Arena has suffered serious damage in the civil war which has engulfed the area and Bayern will be thankful that this match will be played much closer to home near the Polish border.
Donetsk haven’t been in action for two months thanks to the Ukrainian winter break and they play Bayern for the very first time in their history. They are trailing Dynamo Kiev in their domestic league, however finished a creditable second in the Champions League group stage behind FC Porto and will be quietly confident of snatching the spoils tonight.
We don’t share any enthusiasm they may have however. Bayern are firm favourites to repeat their triumph of two years ago in this competition, however they haven’t had things their own way in the Bundesliga, returning from the winter break with a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Wolfsburg and a 1-1 draw with FC Schalke.
They come into this match on the back of a massive 8-0 win over Hamburger SV however and manager Pep Guardiola will therefore be massively confident of taking an advantage from this away leg back to the Allianz Arena, especially with his side sitting firmly on top of the Bundesliga.
The German side will go to Western Ukraine expecting victory and we expect it to be a reasonably convincing win. Nevertheless, we shouldn’t underestimate a Donetsk side who are banging in the goals this season and they will take the Bundesliga champions all the way tonight.
