We all love a good cup shock don't we and a Palace win earlier in the season would certainly have been something of an upset. Alan Pardew has guided the Eagles up the Premier League table however and they can get the better of Southampton at St Mary's on Saturday.
Much was expected from Alan Pardew at Selhurst Park and he certainly hasn’t failed to deliver so far. His Palace side have won all of their three matches since his appointment as manager, scoring nine goals and conceding just three in that time. Perhaps their most impressive result was a 2-1 defeat of a Spurs side fresh from a 5-3 thumping of leaders Chelsea.
As a result, the south London side have emerged from being relegation near-certainties to mid-table candidates and as things stand, things are looking particularly rosy for Pardew’s side.
Southampton have been flying high in the Premier League since the start of the season, Ronald Koeman managing to steer his side to third in the table with a squad which was expected to struggle this season. Their last three Premier League outings have seen wins over Newcastle, Manchester United and Arsenal and the Saints are looking set for a foray into the Champions League failing a collapse in form.
Nevertheless, the side needed a replay to squeeze past Championship side Ipswich in the third round of this competition and this could perhaps suggest that Koeman is concentrating on maintaining their position in the Premier League. It could be argued that the home squad isn’t strong enough to fight on more than one front and as such, the FA Cup may be lower in Koeman’s list of priorities.
Palace may be hungrier for a win in this match. They will in confident spirits following their recent upturn in fortunes and a mid-table position is looking ever more secure following their 3-2 win at Burnley last weekend.
Either way, this looks set to be a clash in which both sides will get onto the scoresheet and as such we’ll be backing both teams to score. Palace will certainly be eager to maintain their recent winning run however and we expect them to be involved in the fifth round draw.
