Swansea helped their cause no end when they beat high-flying Southampton at St Mary's last weekend. They can continue their climb up the table with a home win against the Black Cats.
Swansea returned to winning ways in the Premier League for the first time since Boxing day and they will be eager to make it two on the bounce when they face Sunderland at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.
The Swans started the season in excellent fashion, beating Manchester United 2-1 in their opening match and following that result with two Premier League wins against Burnley and West Brom.
It hasn’t exactly been plain sailing since then however and they find themselves in a mid-table position following some inconsistent results, however they have made the Liberty Stadium something of a fortress this season, their only home defeats coming at the hands of Southampton, Spurs and Chelsea and will be confident of overcoming anything that Gus Poyet’s side can throw at them.
Sunderland enjoyed their first Premier League win since before Christmas when they defeated struggling Burnley at the Stadium of Light last week. They followed this with a hard-fought 3-1 win against Fulham in an FA Cup fourth round replay on Tuesday evening.
Nevertheless they haven’t exactly been scoring for fun of late and will struggle against a Swans side which has conceded just eight home goals since the start of the season before the 5-0 defeat by Chelsea last month.
Indeed, Sunderland have scored less goals than any other side in the top flight apart from Aston Villa, West Brom and Hull and we can’t see them finding any way past a solid home defence. As such, we’ll be backing a Swansea win-to-nil.
As far as goalscorers are concerned, we’re not expecting many to get their names onto the scoresheet. an exception to this is Bafetimbi Gomis. The French striker scored a brace in the 6-2 FA Cup thrashing of Tranmere Rovers last month and will be eager to add to his four goals scored this season.
This isn’t going to be a match full of goals, indeed we’re expecting the match to be settled by a solitary strike. Either way, it will certainly be a close fought affair and we’ll be going for a 1-0 home win.
