Wigan may be the hot favourites to win this season's Super League at 3/1 but they will be severely put to the test on the Vikings' artificial pitch tonight.
Super League is here and what better way to launch the new season than with a clash between two giants of the game, namely Widnes and Wigan.
These two arch-rivals will battle it out at the Select Security Stadium and despite Wigan starting the match as odds-on 2/7 favourites, Widnes can certainly cause an upset on the opening day.
Last season’s runners-up have lost twice and won by a solitary point in their last three visits to Widnes and although we’re not for a second suggesting that the Warriors will be run off the park, a tight match is very much expected despite the visitors possessing a much stronger squad.
Widnes improved considerably last season and managed to reach the play-offs for the very first time, a dramatic Warrington come-back denying them a place in Preliminary Semi Finals. It must be said that several sides struggled on the Vikings’ new artificial i-pitch last term, Champions St Helens, Huddersfield and Warrington also coming to grief there.
Indeed, Widnes only lost two home matches by more than twelve points last season and there is little to suggest that they will be any less competitive this time around.
With the Warriors only winning five of their games on the road by more than twelve points last term, we’re going to stick our necks out and back a win for the home side, especially since Wigan’s new half-back pairing of George Williams and Matty Smith will be needing some time to gel.
The opening few weeks of the Super League season can spring many surprises and as such, punters may be well advised to keep stakes relatively sensible, however Widnes look good to keep pace with the leading pack this term and they could get to a tremendous start with a win against the Super League favourites.
