As the sister brand of the ever-popular PokerStars, both part of The Stars Group, BetStars made its way into the New Jersey sports betting landscape fairly quickly, coming in mid-September 2018.

Coming just over a month after DraftKings had arrived, BetStars had a bit of a rocky release, initially only having Android functionality. However, BetStars now has a platform on both Android and iOS and has their desktop version, too.

BetStars also has its tried-and-true risk-free welcome bonus offer, which is worth of up to $500. After pushing to get in the game in time for the 2018 NFL season, how is BetStars doing now?

Key Features

As previously mentioned, BetStars has its product on all major platforms and for all devices, having been downloaded over 41 million times, according to its website.

Upon logging in to BetStars, new users will receive a risk-free bet of up to $500. Meaning, if you place a wager of any amount up to the $500, you are protected and will receive a Free Bet refund. There are some conditions worth mentioning, though. The wagers only apply to straight or parlay wagers and you must make your first deposit with a service other than Neteller and/or Skrill.

Also, if you lose and get the refund, you will only receive the winnings, not the full amount. This matters due to BetStars seemingly not having any kind of odds restrictions on this bonus. So, you could wager on anything, even heavy favorites. For example, if you first wager was $300 and you lost and you got the Free Bet refund, you couldn’t turn around and bet on a -300 team and expect to get $400 back if they were to win, you’d get just the $100 back.

BetStars home page has many intriguing options for other kinds of bets, such as Odds Boosts and Super Boosts, which are a series of scenarios that you can bet on. The site has all major sports imaginable and even clickable links to their partnered sites, PokerStars and PokerStars Casino.

Like DraftKings and FanDuel, BetStars also has articles on their site from writers giving tips and advice for teams to wager on, something doesn’t appear to be all that common outside of these three sportsbooks. As far as odds go compared to others in the industry, like most sportsbooks everything is fairly on par. Due to the influx of sportsbooks, everyone needs to stay relatively on the same playing field.

BetStars Betting Markets

BetStars is currently located in New Jersey. In order to place a bet, you must be within the confines of the state. Due to geolocation software, BetStars will be able to recognize if you are in the state prior to submitting a wager. You do not need to be a New Jersey citizen, but you must be 21 years of age or older.

For sports, BetStars has them all and they are broken up into the follow categories:

  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Boxing/UFC
  • Cricket
  • Cycling
  • Darts
  • Football
  • Golf
  • Hockey
  • Motor Sports
  • Rugby Union
  • Soccer
  • Tennis

User Experience

Looking at the mobile app(s) version and the desktop version, they are nearly identical. Of course, there is some formatting going from desktop to mobile, but everything is the same from the logos and the placement of things, to the team colored logos, everything is easy to see and maneuver.

On the mobile version, when you click on a desired wager, a blue bet slip icon will appear in the upper right of the pane and a number will appear based on the amount of wagers you wish to make.

There’s a lot of different submenus on the app, but everything is nicely broken up, and it’s easy to discern the promotions section from the regular betting section. Like the desktop version, all the sports are along the top of the app, too.

The one thing BetStars is lacking as far as user experience goes is actually in some of their betting lines. In comparing to their direct competitors, it appeared that, generally, BetStars provided worse odds for underdogs in their respective games. While it may not seem like many points, if you bet on a parlay of numerous underdogs, the difference in points and potential winnings could make bettors look for a different platform to capitalize on.

Support and Banking

One area that BetStars would greatly benefit from improving is their banking options, meaning the different ways to deposit and withdraw funds. For standard deposits, users can either deposit money at a physical cash cage in New Jersey, an e-check/ACH, Neteller, PayNearMe, PokerStars Instant Online Banking, PokerStars prepaid card, Skrill or Visa/MasterCard. BetStars also has a “fast deposit” function if you use a Visa/MasterCard, Neteller, Skrill or an e-check.

Withdrawals can happen using ACH/e-check, going to the cash cage, Neteller or Skrill. The one glaring means of depositing and withdrawing that is missing is PayPal, something that some of BetStars competitors use. PayPal is vital for sportsbooks as it is one of the most used platforms for exchanging currency for different things.
