Predicting Harry Skelton’s Rides in Big Races

Harry Skelton is the number one jockey for his brother Dan’s powerful training operation, and so he will be riding all of his main hopes in the biggest races of the season. Dan Skelton has a number of top-level horses in his care, so Harry will usually be riding well-fancied runners at all of the big meetings.

Here, our experts will guide you through the horses that Harry Skelton is likely to ride in the most prestigious races on the calendar.

Who will Harry Skelton ride in the Grand National?

The Grand National is one major race that has so far eluded the 2021 British Champion jumps jockey. Despite being the youngest jockey to win the Irish Grand National, his exploits in the Aintree showpiece have been a little underwhelming.

In 2023, however, Harry Skelton will be lining up in the world-famous race with a real chance of recording his maiden victory. Harry is set to ride the well fancied, Le Milos, for his brother Dan.

Le Milos has the perfect profile for a potential Grand National, with his touch of class being joined by plenty of untapped staying potential over marathon trips. If Le Milos fails to line up in this year’s renewal, Skelton also has the option of partnering this season’s Becher winner, Ashtown Lad.

Who will Harry Skelton ride in the Champion Hurdle?

Harry Skelton has yet to win the prestigious Cheltenham Champion Hurdle, and unfortunately for the jockey, that is unlikely to change in 2023. In fact, Skelton is unlikely to have a ride in this year’s renewal, with his brother not having a horse entered for the two-mile championship race. The best that Harry can hope for is to pick up a spare ride on some of the other horses set to run.

Who will Harry Skelton ride in the Champion Chase?

The 2023 Champion Chase will see Harry Skelton continue his partnership with the ultra-consistent, Nube Negra. Skelton has been on board the 9yo in all of his 28 starts in Britain, and the pair have picked up some big prizes along the way. Beaten just ½ length in the 2021 renewal of the Champion Chase, Skelton will be hoping for another big run from this season’s Shloer Chase winner.

Who will Harry Skelton ride in the Gold Cup?

Harry Skelton will be hoping to go two better than he did 12 months ago in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. On that occasion, Skelton steered the Sir Alex Ferguson-owned, Protektorat, to finish third behind impressive winner, A Plus Tard.

Protektorat seems to love it around the Cheltenham track and is many punters’ idea of a cracking each-way bet for the festival’s showpiece. A very impressive winner of the Betfair Chase at Haydock this season, Protektorat will have to bounce back from a slightly disappointing effort in the Cotswold Chase last time out.

Biography

Harry Skelton is part of a family steeped in the horse world. The son of the legendary show jumper, Nick, Harry is also the younger brother of the very successful trainer, Dan. Born on the 20th of September 1989, Harry’s life was always destined to have horses in it, and rather than following in his father’s footsteps, he set his sights on becoming a horse racing jockey.

After beginning his career in the saddle on the flat for Richard Hannon, Skelton decided to make the switch to jump racing and started with the powerful Paul Nicholls yard, where his brother was now an assistant trainer.

Harry enjoyed some major success for Nicholls, most notably when winning the Champion Chase at Cheltenham on Politologue. In 2013, Skelton decided to follow his brother to be part of Dan’s new training operation and has played a big part in the success enjoyed by the yard, particularly as stable jockey and number one rider.

Skelton has had a hugely successful career in the saddle to date, winning four times at the Cheltenham Festival, and adding races such as the Tingle Creek, Kauto Star Novices’ Chase, Manifesto Novices’ Chase, and the Betfair Chase to his list of big race wins.

Skelton, who is married to fellow jockey, Bridget Andrews, was crowned British Champion Jump Jockey in 2021, having ridden a massive 152 winners across the season.

The Skelton brothers will be fancying their chances of adding to their big successes this season and will be hoping that the likes of Protektorat and Nube Negra can provide them with yet more top-level wins.
