At the moment, online casino fans in Alberta can sign up and play at sites that hold valid international licenses, for example, those issued by authorities in Malta and Curacao. While these sites aren’t specifically licensed for players in Canada, they’re not illegal in most provinces (with the exception of Ontario online casinos, which need a specific license). But all of this will change on 13th July 2026, which is when regulated online casino gambling launches in the province.

As from 13th July, if an online casino wants to accept players in Alberta, it will need a specific license from the province, issued by Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC). Up until now, there has only been one regulated online gambling site in the province (called PlayAlberta), but now other commercial operators can begin to apply for licenses in Alberta.

This change means that you’ll have a safer experience, because to get a license, a site needs to prove that it has player protection at the heart of its operations. Regulated sites will need to have player verification checks and responsible gambling tools in place, plus they’ll also need to prove that their games are fair and that your personal data is stored securely.

Best Alberta Online Casinos

At the time of writing, more than 30 online casino operators and 35 game providers have already applied for licenses in Alberta and we’re certain that this number will grow as the regulation date draws closer. So it’s safe to say that some of these sites will be better than others, both in the variety of games and the general user experience. To help you decide where you want to sign up, we’re put together a list of a few of our favorite sites that are due to launch in Alberta and we’ll let you know what makes each of them worth a try.

How to Sign Up at an Alberta Online Casino

If you’ve signed up at a Canadian online casino before, using a regulated Alberta site won’t be very different, except you might need to go through a stricter verification process before you can start playing. The great news is that some Alberta casino sites will accept pre-registrations in advance of the launch date, so you can get ahead. Follow these steps to start playing at Alberta online casinos:

Step 1 of 3

Create Your Account

Click through to your chosen Alberta casino and fill in the sign-up form. The process is quick - you'll be logged in and ready to play in just a few minutes.

  • Click on a link on this page to go to the casino site
  • Complete the sign-up form with your name, email address, date of birth and address
  • Verify your phone number or email address if prompted
  • You'll be logged straight into your account
Step 2 of 3

Set Your Responsible Gambling Limits

Before you deposit, now is a good time to set your responsible gambling limits. Alberta casinos are required to offer these tools and they're easy to find in your account settings.

  • Set a deposit limit to control how much you can add to your account
  • Add a loss limit to cap how much you can lose in a session, day or week
  • Consider setting a wagering limit to manage your total bet activity
  • Limits can usually be found under Account Settings or Responsible Gambling
Step 3 of 3

Deposit & Start Playing

Hit the deposit button - usually at the top of the page when you're logged in - and you'll be taken to the cashier. Pick your payment method, enter your amount, and the money lands in your account instantly.

  • Click the deposit button, usually at the top of the page when logged in
  • You'll be taken to the cashier section
  • Select your casino payment method and the amount you want to deposit
  • Complete the transaction - funds go into your account immediately
  • Head to the games lobby and start playing

During the sign up process, PlayAlberta does a soft identity check with Equifax, so it’s likely that other Alberta-licensed sites will do the same. This is part of the process of keeping all players safe ensuring that you’re really who you say you are. You may be asked to provide additional documentation, for example photo ID like a passport, and a utility bill as well.

As part of the sign up process, you’ll be asked for your occupation and the name of your employer. This is to combat financial crime and just like account verification, it’s necessary to keep you safe.

How do I withdraw my winnings?

The first thing to know is that you won’t be charged any tax on your online casino winnings in Alberta, so you can withdraw the full amount and it’s all yours to keep.

Making a withdrawal at a regulated Alberta online casino is as easy as depositing is. Just go to the cashier section, choose your payment method, enter the amount you want to withdraw and complete the transaction. Most online casinos offer multiple withdrawal options, for example bank transfers, Interac and PayPal and you’ll usually need to withdraw using the same method you used to deposit. Depending on the site, the minimum withdrawal could be $10 or $20.

Most Alberta online casinos will put your withdrawal request into a pending state for up to 48 hours, while they review and approve it. After that, the time it takes to get the money will depend on the method you used, for example PayPal can be instant but bank transfers take up to five days.

Pros and Cons of signing up to a regulated online casino in Alberta?

There are tons of reasons why you should sign up for a regulated Alberta online casino, the main ones being that they’re safer than any other gambling options, plus the range of games and general user experience is sure to be excellent. The main downside is that not all online casinos will be granted an Alberta license, so if you’re already using a certain site, you might need to say goodbye.

What to look for in Alberta Online Casinos?

You’re about to become pretty spoiled for choice when it comes to online casinos in Alberta, so it’s worth knowing exactly what differentiates a great casino from an average one.

The first thing to look at is the selection of games. Online slots are important, because they’re usually the main attraction, but top Alberta casinos also have lots of table games like online roulette, online blackjack and online baccarat, as well as live dealer table games including game shows. Be sure to look out for titles with unique themes, exclusive games and progressive jackpots.

The best Alberta online casinos give you multiple different ways to deposit and withdraw. Interac is one of the top payment methods for players in Alberta, but you should also be able to use bank cards (Visa and Mastercard), bank transfers and e-wallets like PayPal. It’s always best when an online casino supports fast withdrawals and when there are no extra fees.

Customer support and responsible gambling are also important and they go hand-in-hand. You’ll want to see 24/7 support via live chat or email, and responsible gambling tools like personal limits and self-exclusion should be easy to access.

You’ll probably want to enjoy online casino games when you’re on the go, so you should always check if your online casino of choice has a downloadable app, or an optimized mobile website. The site or app should offer the same range of games as the main site, as well as features like quick payments and live chat support.

Before you sign up at any licensed Alberta online casino, you should always double check the licensing details (usually available in the footer of the site) and cross-reference them with the AGLC, so make sure that the site is actually legit.

 In-Person Casinos in Alberta

While there are plenty of reasons to play at online casinos - it’s so convenient, the game variety is excellent and you can even do it from your mobile phone - you might still enjoy a trip to a land-based casino every now and then. Visiting a traditional casino is a totally different experience, as it’s more social and often involves other fun activities, like good food and drinks or even seeing a show. If you want to head to a casino in Alberta, we’d recommend these:

At the moment, gray market casinos (sites licensed outside of Alberta, for example in Malta or Curacao) are still legal in the province, but this is likely to change in the future, when online casino gambling becomes regulated. According to the government of Alberta, about 70% of gambling in the province is currently done at gray market sites.

The first step is that gray market online casinos in Canada which are currently operating will apply for Alberta licenses. If the license is granted, the site can continue to offer services to players in Alberta, with no problems. The AGLC has also said that it will consider a three month grace period on a case-by-case basis, so some online casinos may still be allowed to operate while their license is in progress.

Once regulation is fully in place, it’s likely that sites without licenses will stop operating in the province altogether. Even if you can still find the odd grey market casino, we’d highly recommend sticking to regulated sites where you can expect a safer experience.

Look out for unsafe casinos, by checking the license details in the footer of the casino site before you play. You’ll be looking for a specific license number from the AGLC.

Online Casinos vs Online Sports Betting

Online sports betting and casino gambling is treated the same way in Alberta, for the purpose of regulation. This means that just like online casinos, sports betting sites will need to be licensed in the province if they want to operate after July 13th. In our experience, many online casino operators have a sportsbook product attached, so you won’t need to sign up at two different sites.

If PlayAlberta is anything to go by, regulated Alberta sportsbooks will offer an excellent selection of betting options. And seeing major brands like Bet365 and FanDuel are already amongst the applicants for licenses, you’ll have plenty of variety to choose from. We expect licensed sports betting sites to offer markets on popular sports like hockey, football and baseball, as well as international events like the NFL, MBA and Premier League. You can also expect to see a good range of e-sports betting options, including Counter Strike, League of Legends and Dota 2.

While some gray market betting sites might offer odds on prediction markets, for example upcoming elections, these are not allowed in Alberta, so you won’t be able to bet on any political events.

Put simply, any form of gambling that doesn’t hold a valid license from the AGLC is either illegal already, or in the context of online casino gambling, will not be allowed after 13th July. This includes privately-run land-based casinos or retail sportsbooks, which don’t have a license. Even charitable organizations need to be licensed to run raffles or bingo events.

Just like online casino gambling, sport betting is regulated in Alberta by the AGLC. At the moment, PlayAlberta is the only licensed online sports betting site, but as market leaders like DraftKings and Bet365 have already applied for their licenses, more will be available from July onwards.

As we’ve mentioned, one form of gambling which is not allowed at all under Alberta law is prediction markets, for example betting on political events like elections. This is to try to minimize the risks of interference with results, based on potential betting outcomes. Alberta casinos will also not offer bets on “events which are unethical, allow entertainment to be derived from human suffering or death or involve non-consensual violence or injury”.

Some forms of online gambling are not explicitly prohibited in Alberta, but they don’t come under the same laws as online casino gambling and sports betting. One example here is sweepstakes casinos, some of which are accessible in the province, but aren’t regulated in the same way that real money casinos are.

Do Regulated Online Casinos Have Responsible Gambling Tools?

The AGLC is very focused on promoting responsible gambling, so you can be absolutely certain that all licensed Alberta sites will have tools in place and resources to support you, so that you can enjoy a safe and fun experience.

Most online casinos will give you the option to set deposit, loss, or wagering limits directly within your account section. These limits can be set to apply daily, weekly or monthly and they always be adjusted down, but increasing them will generally take 24 hours.

Another useful tool is a reality check, which will remind you how long you’ve been playing. You’ll also be able to see your wins, wagers and losses for the session, to get a bit more context.

A key part of responsible gambling in Alberta is that all licensed online casinos will need to be part of the province-wide self-exclusion scheme. This allows players to self-exclude from all of Alberta’s regulated online casinos, as well as all casinos and racing entertainment centres in the province. You can do this for a period of between six months and three years and it’s easy to implement via an online form.

If you don’t want to go as far as self-excluding, your online casino might offer a “time out” feature, where you can block access to your account for a period of between 24 hours and six weeks, to give yourself a break.

Alberta Gambling Support Resources

If you need help with responsible gambling in Alberta, the first thing to do is consult your online casino’s responsible gambling section, where you’ll be able to find a list of resources. You can also get in touch with the customer support team via live chat or email, as they will be trained in responsible gambling matters.

GameSense is an excellent resource, which offers help with budgeting, a cost of play calculator, information on different casino games and tips on how to spot a potential gambling problem. You can visit gamesenseab.ca, or contact the GameSense helpline on 833-447-7523.

The AGLC also offers responsible gambling resources, for example the self-exclusion program. You can enrol via your online casino’s website, or at selfexclusion.ca. Additionally, there are community mental health support options, for example Alberta Gamblers Anonymous and Smart Recovery, which assists with any addictive behaviour.
