How to Calculate Sports Betting Odds

Our betting odds calculator serves three useful functions. First, you'll quickly see the potential payout you stand to earn from a single bet. The calculator cuts out the potential for human error.

Second, it shows you the equivalent odds in the other two formats, American, decimal and fractional, so you can see how a price you're used to compares to how it's displayed elsewhere. Finally, it shows the implied probability behind those odds, the built-in chance of success the sportsbook is pricing in.

Beyond a single bet, the same calculator handles accumulators (what US bettors call parlays), each-way bets, and system bets like the Trixie, Yankee and Lucky 15, common in UK and Irish betting.

The sections below explain the different betting odds formats and what they mean. For now, let's focus on how to use our bet payout calculator to work out your potential winnings on a bet.

Using This Sports Bet Payout Calculator

Let's say you want to place a $75 bet on Scottie Scheffler to win the Masters and you see his odds listed at 12/1. Fractional odds are common in the UK and other parts of Europe but not at US sportsbooks. You could use this calculator to instantly see that 12/1 equates to +1200 in American odds and 13.00 in decimal odds. To figure out your potential profit, follow these steps:

  1. Enter your betting amount. In this example it would be $75.
  2. Choose your preferred odds format. You would select "Fractional" for this example.
  3. Enter the odds. The calculator shows your stake, profit and total returns, plus the equivalent odds in the other two formats and the implied probability behind the bet.
  4. In this example, Scheffler winning would net you $900 in profit, and your $75 stake is returned on a winning bet, so your total payout would be $975.

Another Gambling Odds Calculator Example

You might see an online bookmaker offering decimal odds of 1.69 on the LA Lakers to win on the moneyline against the Philadelphia 76ers in an NBA game and decide you want to wager $100 on the Lakers. Our betting odds calculator shows what 1.69 is equivalent to in American and fractional odds, plus your potential payout:

  1. Type in $100 as your betting amount.
  2. Set the preferred format to decimal.
  3. Enter 1.69 in the decimal odds box. You'll see that it equates to -145 and 69/100, with a 59% implied probability of success.
  4. The results show a $69 profit and a $169 total payout, since you get your stake back on a winning bet.

Understanding Sports Betting Odds Formats

Before you can use the calculator with confidence, it helps to know what each odds format is actually telling you. Here's a breakdown of American, decimal and fractional odds, plus what implied probability means and how to read it.

What are American Odds?

American odds can start with either a plus (+) sign or a minus (-) sign. If the odds start with a plus, it tells you the profit you'd earn from a $100 bet if successful. For example, if the Kansas City Chiefs are priced at +800 to win the Super Bowl, expect an $800 profit from a successful $100 bet. American odds don't include the return of your bet amount, so your total payout would be $900, since you get your risk amount back too.

You don't have to wager precisely $100, that's just a guide. You could bet $20 on the Chiefs at +800 and earn a $160 profit and a $180 total payout if they won.

If American odds start with a minus symbol, it tells you the amount you'd need to wager to win $100. For example, odds of -110 on the Brooklyn Nets to cover the spread against the Boston Celtics mean you'd need to risk $110 to generate a $100 profit, for a $210 total payout. You could bet $5,000 on the Nets covering and earn a $4,545 profit if they were successful.

What are Decimal Odds?

Decimal odds tell you the total payout you stand to earn from a winning bet, including the profit and the return of your bet amount. They're the most common format used in Europe, Canada, Australia and various other countries. Convert decimal odds to American or fractional using our free betting odds calculator.

Sticking with the NFL odds examples above, odds of 9.00 on the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl mean a $9 payout (an $8 profit plus the return of your $1 stake) for every $1 wagered. A $100 bet at 9.00 pays out $900. You'd also find odds of 1.91 on the Nets covering the spread in decimal format, meaning $1.91 in return for every $1 wagered if successful.

What are Fractional Odds?

Fractional odds are the prevailing format in the UK, and also common in horse racing betting worldwide. Convert fractional odds to American or decimal using this calculator.

Like American odds, fractional odds tell you the potential profit from a winning bet, not including your stake back. Calculate your profit by multiplying your bet amount by the fraction. For example, 8/1 on the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl means a $100 bet returns an $800 profit, plus your $100 stake back. Odds of 10/11 on the Nets covering the spread mean a $110 bet returns a $100 profit. Some fractions get complex fast, so let the calculator do the work.

What is Implied Probability?

This tells you the inherent chance of success a set of betting odds implies. For example, odds of +100 (2.00 decimal, 1/1 fractional) imply exactly a 50% chance of success. A longshot NFL futures bet at 40/1 (+4000 American, 41.00 decimal) implies a 2% chance of success. A heavy favorite at -800 (1.13 decimal, 1/8 fractional) implies an 88% chance.

This is why the tool is often called a probability-to-odds calculator or an implied odds calculator, showing the chance of winning based on the odds set by top US sportsbooks and the best sports betting apps.

How to Calculate My Payout?

Our sports betting calculator works out your potential payout on any bet, quickly and simply, cutting out the possibility of human error. You can also use it to check your sportsbook is providing fair payouts. Type in your bet amount, preferred format and odds. For example, a $100 bet at an Arizona sports betting site on the Coyotes to win an NHL game at +120 shows a potential win of $120 and a total payout of $220 if successful.

Calculating Parlays, Each-Way Bets and System Bets

Beyond a single bet, the same calculator handles more complex wagers. Switch to "Accumulator" to combine multiple selections into one bet, what American bettors know as a parlay, and see the combined odds converted across all three formats alongside the total payout. For a full breakdown of multi-leg betting, see our dedicated parlay calculator.

Toggle "Each-way" to split your stake between a win portion and a place portion, common in horse racing and golf betting, with support for dead heats where multiple entries tie for a position.

For UK and Irish-style system bets, the calculator supports the Trixie, Patent, Yankee, Lucky 15, Canadian, Lucky 31, Heinz, Lucky 63, Super Heinz and Goliath, each showing a full line-by-line payout breakdown alongside your total return.

Why Use an Odds Converter?

An odds converter is an incredibly useful tool, one all serious gamblers have used at some point if not frequently. Being a successful sports bettor isn't about picking one team you think is better than another team.

The betting odds are the most important thing, whether it's the point spread or moneyline. A good gambler looks for betting value in numbers more than value in teams or players. Our odds calculator provides those hard numbers instantly, in every format, so bettors know the exact numbers before deciding which outcome to back.

Our free bet code converter is also helpful for bettors who don’t necessarily count every dollar in their bankroll. It immediately lays out the inherent risk/reward in any bet. For example, the New York Yankees could be -250 on the moneyline for a home game against the Toronto Blue Jays at some Ontario sports betting sites. Maybe you want to bet on the Yankees at that price to earn a profit of $60. The calculator shows the bettor must risk $150 to win $60, leaving them to decide if that’s good value or not without having to calculate it on their own.

How to Read Betting Odds

The betting calculator can help with all sorts of wagers, not just point spreads. It works the same way for prop bets and totals.

Point Spread

The point spread is the most common form of betting in the U.S., generally listed as:

  • New England Patriots -7.5 -110
  • Miami Dolphins +7.5 -110

A bet on the Patriots means they need to win by eight points or more. A bet on the Dolphins means they can't lose by more than seven. The number to the right of the spread is what you'd need to wager to win $100. Enter your bet amount, put "-110" into the odds section, and see your potential payout.

Totals

Totals work the same way. Over/under is a popular way to bet on the combined score rather than either team:

  • Houston Rockets U 233.5 -110
  • Golden State Warriors O 233.5 -110

Bettors decide if the combined score lands over or under 233.5. Follow the same steps as point spread betting to calculate the risk and reward.

Prop Bets

Prop bets often carry different odds than the standard -110. An NBA player prop might look like:

Points Scored By Trae Young

  • Over 29.5 +115
  • Under 29.5 -141

It's harder to do the math for something like -141 in your head, so let the calculator handle it.

How to Read Horse Racing Odds

Horse racing odds are generally shown in fractional format. The number on the left of the slash tells you the profit for the amount on the right. For example, 7/1 means a $7 profit for every $1 wagered if the horse wins. Odds of 9/2 mean a $9 profit for every $2 wagered, and 10/3 means a $10 profit for every $3 bet.

Multiply your bet amount by the fraction to calculate profit, then add your stake for the total payout. Horse racing also commonly uses each-way betting, splitting your stake between a win bet and a place bet, which this calculator supports directly, making it an effective horse racing bet calculator too.
