Massachusetts Sports Betting - Best Mass Sportsbooks & Betting Sites Dec 2022

Coming Soon in Massachusetts

Massachusetts sports betting is now legal after Governor Charlie Baker signed SB 269 into law on August 10, 2022.

There was hope Massachusetts sports betting would launch before the end of 2022, based on the fact that several operators such as BetMGM, WynnBET and Barstool have a retail precense and infrastcture in place, however, they are now hoping to launch sports betting in late January 2023.

That was the takeway from the most recent Massachusetts Gaming Commission meeting, where regulators said the plan is for retail to launch in "late January" and mobile to start in "early March."

Massachusetts sports betting regulators are wrestling with the thorny issue of temporary licenses. Massachusetts sports betting law allows for seven permanent, "tethered" licenses (attached to a casino), but doesn't cap the amount of temporary licenses that can be issued. That could cause issues for bettors with pending wagers if a temporary licenses is subsquently not renewed.

The MA Gaming Commission met last Thursday and unfortunately they made little progress during a six-plus hour meeting, the “accelerated” timeline, involving operators having a short window to submit applications, was a major issue.

There have been 42 companies that have filed a "Notice of Intent" to offer Massachusetts sports betting. They are the following:

Each of the state’s three casinos can partner with two online operators. In the end, there could be up to 15 Massachusetts sportsbooks (seven of which won’t be paired with a retail casino). All of the big name operators will likely enter the Bay State, though a handful will have a built-in advantage. BetMGM and WynnBET both have retail casinos, and should be among the first to launch.

DraftKings Massachusetts Sportsbook

Headquartered in Boston, it would be a bit embarrassing if DraftKings Massachusetts Sportsbook wasn't the first sports betting site to launch in the state. Traditionally, it is quick off the mark when new states open for business in the USA market. For instance, DraftKings was the first to launch when New Jersey sports betting opened for business in 2018. With a signup bonus worth as much as $1,000, DraftKings is always a popular option for new bettors. Check out our DraftKings Massachusetts expert review

BetMGM Massachusetts Sportsbook

One of the most established names in the gambling industry, BetMGM prepared for the explosion in sports betting in the U.S. by establishing its own online brand, BetMGM. There's already an MGM hotel situated in Springfield, so the company has a presence within the state, which means it will be among the first to launch sports betting in Massachusetts. Check out our BetMGM Massachusetts sportsbook review.

FanDuel Massachusetts Sportsbook

FanDuel also wastes little time in establishing a foothold in a new market. It would be stunning if it wasn't among the initial arrivals once Mass sports betting is up and operational. As sports betting was legalized across the U.S. in 2018, New York-based FanDuel was acquired by Irish betting giant Paddy Power Betfair, enabling the company to leverage its presence in daily fantasy sports to become a sports betting powerhouse across the country. Barstool Massachusetts Sportsbook

Barstool Sportsbook might be the lock of the century when it comes to which operators will be live in Massachusetts on Day One. Not only is found Dave Portnoy a Mass native, Penn Gaming, which owns Barstool, runs Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville. Barstool has managed to become one of the most popular sportsbooks, despite the increased saturation of the U.S. market. That's because it appeals to the 18-34 crowd better than any operator out there. It's not only the personalities like Dan "Big Cat" Katz or Portnoy himself, though. It also offers great promotions tied into big events and merch giveaways for bettors who wager at least $100 on select big games. Check out our Barstool Massachusetts sportsbook review

BetRivers Massachusetts Sportsbook

It might not have a name that's as recognizable as some of the US betting powerhouses, but BetRivers clearly has game. It has been running right up front with the major players in the industry since sports betting was opened up for legalization across the country. Owned by Chicago-based Rush Street Gaming, BetRivers already has an established presence on the Eastern seaboard. Look for it to be among the early arrivals once Massachusetts legalization gets the rubber stamp. Check out our BetRivers Massachusetts review

WynnBET Massachusetts Sportsbook

Wynn Resorts were late in arriving to the US online sports betting party but is making up ground rapidly. It has formed alliances with several North American sports organizations to strengthen its brand. As established presence in the resort and casino industry, it operates the Encore Boston Harbor Hotel. Look for WynnBET to be among the Massachusetts sports betting sites to launch early. The Superbowl of NFL is king in American sports betting. The NBA and MLB aren't far behind.

The NHL is also popular in the state. Massachusetts has long been a hockey hotbed, not just for the Boston Bruins but also for college hockey. The MLS might not be on that level of popularity. However, there's been a pro soccer presence in Massachusetts for decades.

With popular schools such as Boston College, Boston University, UMass, Harvard, Holy Cross and Northeastern, betting on NCAA sports will also prove popular in online sports betting in Massachusetts. However, it is important to note that under the current legislation, betting on in-state college teams will be prohibited except when they play in tournaments.

Top 5 Massachusetts Sports Teams to Bet On

Some of the most storied and popular teams in professional sports reside in the state of Massachusetts, and soon after Massachusetts legislation legalizes sports betting in the state, fans of those teams will be able to place bets on these teams.

    New England Patriots

No team in NFL history has dominated the league in the manner that the Patriots did for the past two decades. Between 2001-19, the Patriots won 17 AFC East titles and played in nine Super Bowls, winning six of them. The Pats played in eight consecutive AFC Championship Games from 2011-18. From 2001-19, New England only missed the NFL playoffs twice.

    Boston Red Sox

From the days of the supposed Curse of the Bambino, bets against the Red Sox winning a title were the safest play in baseball. The bad luck all changed in 2004, when Boston won its first World Series title since 1918. That opened the floodgates, and the BoSox won further World Series titles in 2007, 2013 and 2018. Massachusetts sportsbooks will constantly offer promos on the Red Sox.

    Boston Celtics

The parquet floor. Bill Russell. Red Auerbach's cigars. John Havlicek. Jo Jo White and Dave Cowens. Larry Bird, Robert Parish and Kevin McHale. The romance between the Celtics and Boston is timeless. With Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart coming off a Finals appearance, the Celtics look like they're on a path to being the continuous success story they once were. Even if this promising group fails to deliver multiple championships, nothing will ever make Celtics fans any less passionate about wagering on their team.

    Boston Bruins

When the Bruins made their NHL debut in 1924, they were the league's first American-based NHL team. By 1927 they were playing in the Stanley Cup final, and in 1929, they were winning it. From Eddie Shore and Dit Clapper to Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito, the big, bad Bruins evolved into an NHL powerhouse. Today, it's David Pastrnak, Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand who carry the Bruins tradition to the ice. They won their most recent Stanley Cup in 2011.

    New England Revolution

Born in 1996, the Revolution were an inaugural franchise in the debut season of the MLS. They have been an ever-present in the league ever since. The Revolution have played in five MLS Cup finals - in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2014 - and lost all of them. Pro soccer history in Massachusetts goes all the way back to the NASL days in the 1970s.

    Massachusetts Sports Betting History

A look back at the progress of Massachusetts sports betting.

1934: Legal gambling comes to Massachusetts for the first time when Wonderland Greyhound Park and Taunton Dog Track opened their doors to racing with parimutuel wagering.

1947: Harness racing began at Bay State Raceway, which later became known as Foxboro Raceway.

1971: The Massachusetts Lottery is approved. The first draws are held in 1972.

2011: The Expanded Gaming Act passes, permitting as many as three casino resorts and one slot parlor to be opened.

2015: Plainridge Park Racetrack opens a slot parlor.

    2018: MGM Springfield Casino opens.

2019: Encore Boston Harbor Casino opens.

2021: The Massachusetts State House approved a sports betting bill in July by a 156-3 margin, but by October hope for sports betting legislation in 2021 was all but gone.

2022: On the final day of the legislative session, the House and Senate reached an historic compromise agreement to legalize Massachusetts sports betting.

Still, lawmakers have stressed it will take longer than most people anticipate. At this point, it’s reasonable to expect a launch near the end of the 2022 NFL season, perhaps timed to Super Bowl 57.

The legislation allows for college sports betting - a sticking point during negotiations - except on in-state teams (betting on in-state teams will be allowed if they are competing in tournaments). The compromised bill was agreed upon several hours after a midnight deadline on July 31.

    Responsible Gambling

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission already has in place a responsible gaming framework that serves to inform gambling regulation in the state. A Public Health Trust Fund has also been established to support strong problem gambling mitigation and prevention programs. The fund gets its financial resources from an assessment on casino licensees and a percentage of the operators' gross gaming revenue. A similar amount will be allotted from regulated Massachusetts betting sites once Massachusetts legalization of sports betting is approved.
