The universal start date for Ohio sportsbooks to launch was announced on June 1. Initially, there was hope for Ohio betting sites to launch this fall, however, the reason for the Jan. 1 date is because there is expected to be roughly 3,000 operator applications to review.

The application process for Ohio sports betting sites opened June 15 and closed on July 15. A second application window - for businesses that want to host betting kiosks and secondary mobile operator "skins" runs from July 15 to August 15. Seven operators had already applied for licenses well in advance of the deadline and 15 more operators followed suit before the window closed on July 15.

Here's a partial list of some of the biggest operators that have applied:

You can view the entire list of applicants here.

The state estimates that Ohio sports betting sites will generate $1.1 billion in its first year, and eventually that number could reach roughly $3.3 billion in the coming years. Ohio Sports Betting History

A look back at the history of sports betting in the state of OH.

    • 1933: The Ohio General Assembly approves of pari-mutuel wagering. This makes betting on horse racing legal in Ohio.
    • 1980: Ohio voters approve of the creation of the Ohio Lotto Commission. This leads to the birth of the state lottery. Later in the year, Ohio voters go to the polls to determine whether to legalize casino gambling. The initiative is defeated.
    • 1990: For a second time, Ohio voters are asked via ballot whether to approve legal casino gambling in the state. Again, the measure is defeated.
    • 1996: A referendum on the legalization of riverboat gambling is put to a vote in Ohio. It is defeated.

    • 2011: Video lottery terminals are approved in the state. They will be located in Ohio racetracks.
    • 2020: A bill to legalize sports betting, SB111, dies in committee without being put to a vote.
    • 2021: The Ohio State Senate approves of SB176, which would legalize sports betting across the state. The sports betting legislation still requires approval in the State House. It would then need Governor Mike DeWine to sign the bill into law.
    • 2021: The Ohio State Senate passes Ohio House Bill 29, which is signed into law by Governor Mike DeWine in late December. Ohio sports betting sites will now apply and go through the typical state process.

House Reps Seek to Legalize Ohio Sports Betting

The original sports betting bill in Ohio, SB111, was introduced by State Senator John Eklund. Following several amendments, it died in committee without being brought to a vote.

Features of an Ohio Sports Betting Site

All sportsbooks are not created equal, and all state's regulations are not the same. As an example, Illinois currently prohibits online signing up of new customers. All new accounts must be opened in person. New Jersey doesn't allow wagering on college sports played within the state or involving schools based in the state. Tennessee offers online and mobile wagering only. There are no retail sites in the Volunteer States.

Once sports betting sites OH are operational, the unique tweaks of the state's betting rules will become clearer. In the meantime, stay on top of the OH sports betting news to gain an inkling of what some of those rules and regulations might be.

    Intuitive User Interface

Ease of use is essential to any web page. When it comes to a betting site, it's vital. Bettors often wait until the last minute to place a wager to get the best odds, so any delays caused by a complicated website could leave them shut out. The best OH online sportsbooks will provide a smooth, easy to use interface that responds quickly and is simple to navigate.

    List of Betting Odds

When the time finally arrives to permit sports betting online in Ohio, bettors will want these sites to deliver three essential qualities when it comes to the betting odds. They want those odds posted early; they'll seek out betting lines that are competitive with other sites; and they will expect these odds to be up-to-date and accurate.

    Live Betting and/or Live Streaming

The chance to make an in-play wager can literally pass in the blink of an eye, so response time of sites that will offer live sports betting OH must be rapid and done in real time. An OH sports betting website that offers live betting will also be expected to deliver a significant library of live streaming options. Live betting simply isn't possible without the ability to view the event as it unfolds. Live betting must be married up to live streaming for it to work well.

    Great Customer Service

Even the best OH sports betting online sites will occasionally encounter problems or issues. How they deal with these situations will go a long way in determining which offer the best online sports betting OH. When dealing with a problem, or when they are need of answers to a question, sports betting online OH sites should provide players with a multitude of options. These should include live chat, email, social media access, by phone and even old-school snail mail.

Types of Sports Bets Offered in Ohio

An Ohio sports betting how to offers a variety of options available.

    • Moneylines are the most frequently made wager. Players are either betting on a favorite (signified by minus odds) or an underdog (plus odds) to be the outright winner of the game.

Cleveland added Deshaun Watson and Amari Cooper this offseason, which has experts bullish on their NFL futures odds.

The NBA calls one team home in professional basketball’s top sports league. The Cleveland Cavaliers are one of the top up-and-coming franchises in pro basketball, with the team recently making the play-in game, but losing. College Football Betting

There are a number of NCAA teams competing in a number of different sports that call the state of Ohio home and Ohio sportsbooks will offer plenty of odds on them all. They are, in alphabetical order: Akron Zips, Bowling Green Falcons, Cincinnati Bearcats, Cleveland State Vikings, Dayton Flyers, Kent State Golden Flashes, Miami RedHawks, Ohio Bobcats, Ohio State Buckeyes, Wright State Raiders, Xavier Musketeers, and Youngstown State Penguins. For betting purposes, Ohio State is the golden goose for sportsbooks, followed by the Cincinnati Bearcats, who are coming off a College Football Playoff appearance.

    NHL Betting

The NHL also has an Ohio-based sports team as the Columbus Blue Jackets call the state home. The Blue Jackets are one of the NHL’s newest teams, having been given an expansion franchise in 2000, and the team has not experienced a deep playoff run to this point. However, the squad is constantly improving and could make waves within the next few seasons as a number of young prospects take the next step to the big leagues. There will be no shortage of NHL promotions at legal Ohio sports betting sites.

    MLS Betting

There are also two professional soccer teams based in Ohio. The first is the Columbus Crew, and the other is FC Cincinnati. The Columbus Crew have been in the league for over 25 years, while FC Cincinnati is one of the newest teams in the league. The Crew were the MLS Cup champions back in 2008, while FC Cincinnati looks like a team that could be on the rise.

If you want to bet on Russian table tennis or Korean baseball, those markets will also be offered by the top sites.

    Better Odds

Competitive odds are vital to Ohio sports betting success. Sites that take too large of a vig - the amount the sportsbook takes off the top as payment for making the bet - should be avoided. The wise bettor always line shops among several sites to find the best odds.

    Deposits and Withdrawals

Along with offering a variety of deposit and withdrawal options, the leading Ohio sports betting sites will process both without hesitation. Expecting a customer to wait 3-5 days for a withdrawal payment in these fast-paced times is patently ridiculous. Also, be sure that the betting site isn't imposing any fees to process a deposit or withdrawal.

    Payout Process

Some sites limit the options for withdrawals and place low limits on the amount that can be withdrawn from an account. Seek out the Ohio sports betting sites that give the player several options and that don't impose fees for withdrawing your hard-won money from your account.

Security at Online Sportsbooks in Ohio

Online security is of paramount importance when it comes to online betting. Significant sums of money are involved. The best Ohio sports betting sites will employ state of the art security and encryption procedures to ensure the safety of their player's info and money.

Top 6 Ohio Sports Teams to Bet On

Fortunately, Ohio pro sports fans are a resilient bunch. There hasn't been a World Series winner in the state since 1990. The last NFL champion from Ohio was in 1964. No Ohio team has ever won the Stanley Cup. At least the Cleveland Cavaliers won the NBA Finals in 2016. And the Columbus Crew are the reigning MLS Cup winners. Oh, and the Ohio State Buckeyes were NCAA football champions in 2002 and 2014.

    Cleveland Browns

    Cleveland Browns

A survey conducted by CBS Sports showed the NFL to be the most Google searched league in Ohio. No surprise there. After all the NFL was born in Canton, Ohio, in 1920. It was somewhat surprising to learn that the Cleveland Browns were the Ohio team searched the most on Google, because up until the last couple of seasons, the Browns needed to send out a search party to find victories. Cleveland holds the distinction of being the only NFL franchise to never play in or play host to the Super Bowl. With the Browns improving dramatically on the field, might that be about to change?

    Ohio State Buckeyes

    Ohio State Buckeyes

Outsiders call the Ohio State University arrogant. Fans of the team simply consider them to be supremely confident. In recent years, Ohio State has proven to be the only Big Ten school capable of giving a game to the SEC powers. Ohio sports betting fans know that during the fall, Saturdays belong to the Buckeyes.

    Cincinnati Bengals

    Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals have been to two Super Bowls and lost them both. In the early stages of a rebuild, Cincy is beginning to lay the foundation for another drive toward the big game. But in the rugged AFC North, they've got their work cut out for them.

    Cincinnati Reds

    Cincinnati Reds

An MLB powerhouse in the 1970s, there's new life being injected into the Big Red Machine that has Reds fans remembering the days of Pete Rose, Johnny Bench and Joe Morgan. They're yet another Ohio team that hit rock bottom and is clawing their way back to the top.

    Cleveland Guardians

    Cleveland Guardians

Cleveland's newly-renamed MLB team is embarking upon a rebuild of their own, both in terms of brand and on the playing field. The team hasn't won the World Series since 1948. Under the current conditions, the chances of that drought ending soon appear remote.

    Cleveland Cavaliers

    Cleveland Cavaliers

LeBron James rallied the Cavs from a 3-1 deficit to claim the 2016 NBA title from Golden State. Then he left for the glitz and glamor of LA. Cleveland's NBA team has since fallen upon hard times. Their 2016 title was the first claimed by the city since the Browns were 1964 NFL champions.

    Responsible Gambling

Ohio for Responsible Gambling is an initiative aimed at promoting responsible gambling in Ohio. Four state agencies in Ohio are working together in this effort: The Ohio Lottery Commission, the Ohio Casino Control Commission, the Ohio State Racing Commission, and the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS). OhioMHAS serves as the resource partner for the initiative and the lead agency responsible for prevention and treatment of problem gambling.
