Draftkings Sportsbook Review

DraftKings Sportsbook Review

DraftKings is one of the best sportsbooks with a reputation for offering high-profile bonuses, fast payouts and a polished user interface. It shot to prominence as a provider of daily fantasy sports games, but it spotted a major growth opportunity after the Supreme Court overturned PASPA, a federal sports betting ban, in 2018. DraftKings quickly launched a Kambi-powered online sportsbook in a bid to become the No. 1 sports betting provider in the United States.

DraftKings Sportsbook initially launched in New Jersey, but it swiftly expanded across the country. It is now live in many different states, where it is battling for market supremacy with rivals such as FanDuel and BetMGM. The company’s strong brand recognition and its willingness to invest heavily in promotional credits have allowed it to become one of the most famous brands in the U.S., and it continues to display a great deal of ambition.

Pros and Cons

Pros
Attractive bonuses and rewards
Fast and reliable payouts
Strong user experience
Cons
Lack of Live Chat for Customer Support
Higher playthrough requirements than competitors

DraftKings Review Summary

DraftKings is a high-quality online sportsbook that offers a superb user experience for casual bettors and experienced handicappers alike. It provides a number of convenient deposit methods, and withdrawals are quick and reliable. The site covers an enormous range of sporting events in excellent detail, with plenty of pre-game, live betting and futures wagering options available.

The wagering requirements are pretty onerous on the flagship welcome bonus, but DraftKings makes up for that with a fantastic array of free bets, contests and short-term promotions. The rewards scheme is also appealing. We would like to see it offer a live chat option for customer service, but it has a comprehensive FAQ section that answers most queries. Overall, it is an excellent all-round online sportsbook that fully merits its status as one of the leading sites in the U.S.

DraftKings Online Sportsbook

Jason Robins, Matthew Kalish and Paul Liberman created DraftKings in 2012. The business initially operated out of Liberman’s house in Boston, and its first contest was a one-on-one MLB tournament. It rose to prominence as a provider of daily fantasy sports (DFS) contests, covering all the major sports leagues. Sports wagering was illegal in every state apart from Nevada, and DFS provided Americans with a tantalizing opportunity to earn a profit from their sporting expertise.

By 2018, DraftKings had become a household name among sports fans. It had attracted a diverse array of investors, including MLB, Fox Sports, Kraft Group, The Raine Group, as well as existing investors Redpoint Ventures, GGV Capital, Accomplice, and tied up advertising deals with the likes of ESPN and NHL. A proposed merger with rival FanDuel had failed to come to fruition, as it was blocked by the Federal Trade Commission, but it was still going from strength to strength.

It really took off after the Supreme Court struck down PASPA in 2018, paving the way for states to legalize sports wagering. The team wasted no time in bringing a DraftKings sportsbook app to market, having hired award-winning white-label provider Kambi to provide the platform, and it embarked upon a major expansion drive. The site still offers daily fantasy sports contests, and it has expanded into online casino gaming too, but the main focus is now online sports betting.

DraftKings went public on the NASDAQ via a three-way merger with white-label supplier SBTech and a SPAC called Diamond Eagle in 2020. That provided the business with a major cash injection, and it has used that war chest to invest heavily in promotional credits as it bids to seize market share from rivals like FanDuel – which also pivoted towards sports betting – and BetMGM. DraftKings is now in the process of transferring from the Kambi platform to the SBTech platform, which should allow it to save money and offer customers even more lucrative promotions.

The company operates retail sportsbooks in various states, and it has tied up deals with some of the country’s most famous casinos to launch the DraftKings app on their master licenses. Robins, the company’s chief executive has gone on to become a billionaire on paper after the firm’s share price soared, and he set DraftKings a “very achievable and perhaps conservative” long-term annual EBITDA target of $1.7 billion.

DraftKings Sportsbook Promo Code

DraftKings will give you a 20% match deposit bonus worth up to $1,000 if you register for a new sportsbook account. You must therefore deposit $5,000 of your own money if you want to unlock the full $1,000 in available bonus funds.

You are then required to complete a pretty onerous rollover requirement on your bonus. DraftKings will release $1 into your account for every $25 wagered, and you have 90 days in which to complete this requirement. If you fail to do so, you will forfeit the funds.

The DraftKings promo code might not sound like a particularly generous welcome offer. By contrast, bet365 promo code offers a 100% welcome bonus worth up to $500 and there is no release requirement. Just wager the bonus funds once and then you can make a withdrawal. The likes of FanDuel, BetMGM and William Hill offer a risk-free bet instead of a match deposit bonus, but they do not attach rollover requirements to the bonus funds.

However, DraftKings more than makes up for it by running a number of additional bonuses, which are really beneficial. A recent example allowed sports fans to bet $1 at odds of 100/1 (+10000) on an NBA team hitting a single 3-pointer in a game. That essentially amounts to a $100 free bet. DraftKings regularly runs bonus offers of this nature, so its promotions are actually very generous on the whole.

Registering at DraftKings

DraftKings Sportsbook offers a simple registration process. You can click on the gray “Sign Up” button at the top right of the homepage to begin the four-step procedure.

  1. You will be asked to choose a username and password and enter your email address.
  2. At this stage you can enter a promo code. This is optional. If you want to secure a free bet and/or a 20% deposit match worth up to $1,000, you can enter a code. If you do not want to deal with wagering requirements, you can simply opt out of the welcome bonus.
  3. Agree to the terms and conditions and click “Next.” You will then be required to enter your name, address and the last four digits of your SSN. In some cases, you will have to provide a scan of photo ID and a utility bill to prove your identity as part of a KYC (Know Your Customer) procedure.
  4. You must then secure your account and confirm your location. The DraftKings Sportsbook app should be used in conjunction with a geolocator. This proves that you are located within a state that offers legal sports betting and in which DraftKings is licensed to operate. DraftKings is live in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, West Virginia, Colorado, Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee and Iowa, and it plans to become a nationwide operator as states continue to legalize sports betting.

One thing we should point out is that there can be pitfalls to opening a DraftKings gambling account when you already have a DraftKings daily fantasy account. Both accounts will lock if a new account is made with identical information, and the process of removing this lock can be frustrating. Otherwise, the signup process at DraftKings is smooth and simple, but it also provides players with confidence in the site’s strong security measures.

DraftKings Sports Betting

You will find a list of the most popular sports and leagues at the top-left of the DraftKings homepage. They are also at the top of the dropdown menu on the DraftKings app. The list varies throughout the year, according to which major sports leagues are currently in season, but the main sports covered at DraftKings are:

These sports are all covered in exceptional depth. The DraftKings sportsbook is currently powered by Kambi, an award-winning white-label provider listed on the NASDAQ in Stockholm. The Kambi platform is also used by sites such as Unibet, BetRivers and TwinSpires. It is really detailed in its sporting coverage, so DraftKings customers can wager on thousands of different events each week.

DraftKings merged with a different white-label provider, SBTech, in a SPAC deal in 2020, so it naturally decided to transition over to the SBTech platform. It is expected to complete this transition in the months ahead. That means the sporting coverage and user experience will change, but DraftKings customers should not notice any discernible drop in quality, as SBTech and Kambi are both excellent sportsbook providers and they cover a very similar array of sports.

Right now you can bet on a huge range of leagues at DraftKings sportsbook. For example, the basketball section features tournaments in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Sweden and Turkey alongside NBA, NCAAB, WBNA and Euroleague. There are also lots of hockey leagues from across Europe featured, while the soccer section covers action in countries and territories like the Faroe Islands, Gibraltar and Hong Kong, along with lower league games in many countries.

You will find a wealth of betting options at your disposal within big games. For instance, an NBA game will include point spread, total points, moneyline, alternate lines, alternate totals, player props and game props. These include player points, assists and rebounds, the player to score the first field goal, the top points scorer of the game, and so on.

You will benefit from a similar breadth of betting options on football, basketball and hockey games, and there are even more props on soccer matches. Tennis and golf fans should be impressed by the large range of different bet types on offer too. DraftKings sportsbook has lots of futures betting options, and a great live betting section that covers most sporting events. The only thing missing is a same game parlay tool. This function is available at rival sportsbooks, and it provides bettors with a great deal of control and flexibility.

Alongside the major sports, DraftKings also covers:

  • Australian Rules
  • Boxing
  • Cricket
  • Cycling
  • Darts
  • Handball
  • Lacrosse
  • Motorsports (NASCAR, F1, IndyCar)
  • Rugby League
  • Rugby Union
  • Table Tennis

That is a very thorough list of sports, and they are all covered in excellent depth. There are a couple of notable absences, such as volleyball, but it is rare to find an online sportsbook that accepts bets on lacrosse, so that is a clear selling point for DraftKings.

Site Experience

The user experience on offer at DraftKings is fantastic. It is naturally similar to rival sites that use the Kambi platform, but DraftKings has opted for an aesthetically pleasing gray, black and green color scheme. Navigation is simple and effective, as the menus are designed intuitively, pages load quickly and there are lots of helpful shortcuts.

The pages look clean and orderly, which helps users find wagers quickly. The bet slip is divided into singles, parlays and round robins, and it populates well. A search function would be a nice addition in future, as that would aid the navigation process. And it would also be great to see DraftKings offer more statistical information on games. However, overall, the site experience is impressive.

Betting Interface: Very User-Friendly
Mobile Betting: Yes
Betting App: Apple, Android
Live Sports Betting: Yes
Live Sports Streaming Yes

Mobile App Experience

The DraftKings sportsbook app has proved extremely popular since it was launched in 2018. The team already had plenty of experience in running a DFS app, and it was in a strong position to pivot towards sports betting. The mobile sportsbook follows a very similar design to the desktop site, and this consistency is helpful. The Kambi platform translates well onto the betting app, and navigation is smooth.

One major selling point for the DraftKings app is that it does not have issues with geolocators. Poor compatibility with geolocation software causes all sorts of glitches with rival apps, but that is thankfully not the case with DraftKings. Its geolocators are accurate, and that helps the app run smoothly.

We tested it out on a range of iOS and Android devices and were impressed with the functionality and the sharpness of the graphics, even on older devices. You can download the app from the DraftKings sportsbook mobile site, or by visiting the App Store or Google Play. It has an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 on the App Store after receiving more than 215,000 user reviews, which is very impressive. Yet we found it warrants such praise, as it is easy to use, the buttons are sharp to the touch and it allows you to place wagers quickly and effectively. Bettors will of course be pleased to know the DraftKings promo code will be available from the app upon sign up.

DraftKings GeoComply

GeoComply is a plug-in that confirms you are located in a state that offers legal sports wagering. You will need to have it turned on when using the DraftKings sportsbook app. This is to ensure DraftKings remains compliant with state law. It is browser specific, but you only need to install it once to avoid any interruptions going forward.

Go to Settings >> Privacy >> Location Services to turn it on. When you land on this section, ensure that location services are on. Scroll down to find the DraftKings sportsbook app. Tap the app and select an option: Never, While Using the App, or Always. The latter two options will allow you to play without any hassle.

Quality of the Odds

The odds are pretty average at DraftKings sportsbook. It offers standard dime lines on most sides and totals, but it occasionally offers -109 / -112 or -107 / -114, so you can find some interesting value on certain teams, and the alternate spreads provide you with a great deal of flexibility. The odds on moneylines, props and futures are rarely market leading, but they are competitive with rival sportsbooks. It releases its lines fairly early.

Notable Features

The DraftKings betting site is full of rich features that enhance the overall experience and offer you added flexibility and control over your wagers. These are some of the key features you can access:

Live Betting

The “Live In-Game” section at DraftKings sportsbook is very comprehensive. It covers all the biggest NFL, basketball, baseball and hockey games, along with thousands of soccer matches, tennis matches and golf tournaments, plus a variety of niche sports. The list of wagering options is always impressive. For example, you can bet on the outcome of every single point or game in obscure doubles tennis matches featuring unheralded players. Live streaming is often available, or you can alternatively see live score updates and infographics.

Cash Out

You also have the option to cash out your bets before the game ends if you are worried that your team will struggle. This allows you to take an early profit, sit back and relax, or mitigate against the potential for further losses. All modern sportsbooks should offer this function, so it is great to see it available at DraftKings, and the offers are reasonably generous.

Pools

DraftKings runs a busy suite of sportsbook pools contests to provide customers with added value and excitement. Most are free to enter, and you can win cash prizes by making astute predictions. Examples include $5,000 prediction pools on MLB games, $10,000 prediction pools on NBA games, a $5,000 NFL Schedule Release Pool and a $5,000 Dan Le Batard Show Popularity Pool.

Understanding Betting Options

DraftKings offers a very large range of betting options on all the biggest sporting events of the week, and you will find plenty of bet types on niche games too. As previously mentioned in this DraftKings sportsbook review, the only thing missing is a same game parlay builder.

Minimum Bet

The minimum bet is just $1 on most sporting events at DraftKings, so it should appeal to all casual players.

Maximum Bet

DraftKings imposes a maximum win amount as opposed to a maximum bet. The maximum you can win on football, basketball and baseball is $1 million, while winnings are capped at $500,000 for the biggest soccer leagues and $250,000 on NHL games and golf tournaments. The limit is $150,000 on tennis, and it is a little lower on niche sports.

Reduced Juice

DraftKings is not a reduced juice sportsbook. Reduced juice books will offer better than -110 on either side of the spread or total line. The classic reduced juice model is -105 nickel lines on either side, whereas DraftKings provides standard -110 dime lines. It does sometimes offer offers -109 on one team, but it will then offer -112 on the other team, or go for -107 / -114, so that does not constitute reduced juice.

Deposit & Withdrawal Methods at DraftKings

DraftKings provides sportsbook customers with a large range of expedient deposit options. All deposits are free, and most are instant. You have a smaller array of DraftKings payout options to choose from, but they are all free of charge, and the team processes payout requests quicker than many rivals.

Depositing Money

You can use a credit card, debit card, ACH direct transfer, e-check, PayPal, Play+ prepaid card or PayNearMe to fund your DraftKings sportsbook account. Alternatively, you can pay in cash at the casino cage at partner properties in various states. Deposits start at $10, and the daily maximum for most accounts is $2,000, but you can contact the customer service department to discuss making larger deposits if you are a high roller.

You can sign up for a DraftKings Play+ prepaid account by logging into your DraftKings account and visiting the deposit page. Select the Play+ funding option and complete the registration process. You can then add funds immediately using your bank card, and your personalized card will be mailed to your address on file within 10-14 days of funding the account.

Withdrawing Money

The DraftKings withdrawal process is pretty smooth and simple. Your options are an electronic check via ACH, a mailed check, Play+, cash at the casino cage or PayPal. Remember that a DraftKings payout via PayPal is only possible if you used that method to fund your account. There is no official maximum DraftKings payout, but you should contact customer service if you plan to make a large withdrawal.

How Does DraftKings Payout?

Payout speeds vary depending on the method you choose. The quickest DraftKings payout options are cash at the casino cage, Play+ or PayPal. The former is a good option if you live near a DraftKings retail sportsbook. PayPal is pretty quick. An ACH transfer takes around five days to arrive, whereas a mailed check can take around two weeks.

DraftKings Sportsbook State Restrictions

Sports betting is now legal in more than half of the states in the country, and that number continues to swell. DraftKings offers a very consistent service across state lines, but you may find individually tailored bonuses when it first goes live in a new state.

DraftKings Colorado

DraftKings launched in Colorado after tying up a licensing deal with Twin River Casino in 2020. The mobile sports betting app and desktop site are available across the state.

DraftKings Iowa

DraftKings operates land-based sportsbooks at the Wild Rose Resorts casinos across Iowa, and it launched its statewide online sportsbook in February 2020.

DraftKings Illinois

DraftKings launched in Illinois in August 2020, making it the second sportsbook to go live in the state. It operates on the license of Casino Queen.

DraftKings Indiana

DraftKings was the third online sportsbook to market in the Hoosier State. It launched in October 2019 after landing a retail partnership with Ameristar Casino.

DraftKings Michigan

DraftKings sportsbook inked a deal with Bay Mills Resort & Casino to launch its online sportsbook in Michigan in June 2020. It also runs the retail sportsbook at Bay Mills.

DraftKings New Jersey

DraftKings is locked in an intense battle with FanDuel for market supremacy in the Garden State. It had first-mover advantage in New Jersey after becoming the state's earliest online sportsbook, but it has since fallen behind FanDuel in terms of monthly handle, so it is investing heavily in regaining its crown.

DraftKings Pennsylvania

DraftKings offers its online sportsbook and casino to bettors in Pennsylvania. It has a partnership with Meadows Casino, and it is also renowned for offering lucrative promotions in the Keystone State.

DraftKings Tennessee

Tennessee does not have retail casinos or sportsbooks and online allows for online sports betting, so DraftKings launched a standalone app in the state in 2021.

DraftKings Virginia

DraftKings wasted no time in going live in Virginia after the state legalized sports betting in 2021. It was not required to find a land-based partner.

DraftKings West Virginia

West Virginia was one of the first states to legalize sports betting after PASPA was overturned in 2018, and DraftKings launched in time for the start of the NFL season the following year.

DraftKings Arizona

DraftKings should be one of the first sportsbooks in Arizona after it tied up a market access deal with TPC Scottsdale. This agreement with the PGA Tour venue will allow DraftKings to launch its popular mobile app and desktop site statewide. That is great news for sports fans in Arizona, as DraftKings is a very ambitious sports betting operator with a reputation for offering large bonuses.

You will be able to bet on a huge range of sports at DraftKings, which should be up and running by the time the NFL season begins. It is one of the most popular sportsbook apps in Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia, and it is all but certain to enjoy a similar status in Arizona.

Read our DraftKings promo code page to learn more about the appealing $1,050 welcome bonus bundle, the short-term promos and the loyalty program you can benefit from when DraftKings launches in Arizona.

DraftKings Casino

DraftKings offers a high-quality online casino in certain states. There are around 500 different games on offer, including a modest array of live dealer options. Its greatest strength is slots, with more than 400 games on offer, ranging from classic 3-reel slots to some of the latest branded 3D slots. There are also some MegaJackpots games, such as Wheel of Fortune, which offer huge prizes. A “New Games” tab provides you with a list of the latest titles on the site.

All the top table games are featured, with a few different video poker options, plus virtual sports and Keno. There is also a “Variety” section, which includes fun, niche casino games. It also has exclusives, such as DraftKings Hockey Blackjack and DraftKings Basketball Blackjack. It is great to see such a comprehensive online casino alongside the online sports betting site and daily fantasy sports games. Just download the DraftKings app or visit the web-based platform to sign up for an account, and you will also receive plenty of casino bonuses.

Loyalty Program

DraftKings enrolls you automatically in its rewards program when you register for an account. You will then earn crowns (loyalty points) by placing wagers in the sportsbook, and these can be exchanged for rewards such as free bets when you accumulate the requisite amount. You will also climb up the tiers – 500 crowns per month moves you up to silver, then you can progress to gold, platinum, diamond and black – earning greater rewards and redemption rates as you progress. You can convert your points into DK Dollars – free bet credits – or gain entry to contests.

DraftKings Customer Support

DraftKings offers customer support from 6 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. ET on a daily basis. Some of its rivals offer 24/7 customer service, so this is one of DraftKings’ limitations. Players should be able to benefit from a 24-hour live chat option when you consider that it is a major brand available in so many states. The customer service process can be inconsistent, as response times are sometimes slow and knowledge levels vary among the agents. This is an area that requires improvement at DraftKings.

Safety and Security

DraftKings has a very strong security record. In 2018, it was targeted in a cyber-attack, but it thwarted this attack without any disruption. It has never suffered a notable security breach, and you should feel secure when playing at this site. DraftKings uses the latest SSL encryption software to keep your details safe at all times, and it has a dedicated security team working hard behind the scenes to keep fraudsters and hackers at bay. Just make sure you choose a strong password and keep it safe.

Responsible Gambling

DraftKings displays a strong commitment to ensuring its customers bet responsibly. It actively monitors cases in which users’ behavior could indicate signs of addiction, and it also has a dedicated responsible gambling section of the site. This provides advice on how to spot problem gamble and how to bet within your means, and it includes links to helpful charities. It also outlines the measures that you can impose upon yourself, such as a timeout, deposit and betting and time limits, or self-exclusion.

Our Verdict of DraftKings Sportsbook

DraftKings fully deserves its status as one of the top online sports betting sites in the United States. The user experience is fantastic via the mobile app and the desktop site, and it offers a strong range of pre-game and live betting options on thousands of sporting events each week.

It also offers a range of really compelling bonuses, ongoing promotions, odds boosts and a rewards program to provide added value. The business is still in the consumer acquisition stage, so it is happy to burn through cash by giving away promotional credits – which is great news for bettors. The high-profile sportsbook contests also help it stand out from the crowd.

There are a couple of minor shortcomings, such as the lack of 24/7 customer service via live chat and the odds are pretty standard, but overall, this is an exceptional online sports betting site. It is safe, secure, reliable and trustworthy, and it stands an excellent chance of eventually becoming the No. 1 online sportsbook in the United States.

Game Types at DraftKings DFS

Just like every other DFS platform, DraftKings requires you to adhere to a provided salary cap when drafting rosters. This helps keep the rosters relatively fair while still remaining competitive.

DraftKings provides all its users the opportunity to join or create daily or weekly fantasy contests for various sports, such as football, hockey, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis, and even e-sports. There are various contest types that allow you to alter the number of people you’re competing with.

  • Guaranteed Prize Pool (GPP): These are large-scale tournaments that have as many as thousands of participants competing to draft rosters that put them in the top ten percent.
  • 50/50s or Double Up: Participants are cut in half, with the top half scorers receiving the prize.
  • Head-to-Head: This is a contest between two people in which the winner receives double the entry fee to enter the contest.
  • Multipliers: Winners of these contests will receive multiples of what the entry fee was worth. Depending on the multiplier chosen, this could be 5x or even 20x what it cost to get in.
  • Qualifier: Unlike other contests, this one takes a lot more than an entry fee. Entry into these contests can only be granted by winning a previous contest.

Customer Support

DraftKings offers customer support services seven days a week between 6 AM and 11:59 PM EST. When it comes to the options to contact customer support, DraftKings is really lacking.

The DFS platform only has a couple of ways to get in contact with the support team, by email or live chat. There is no way to call the support team by phone.

Payment & Banking

DraftKings accepts a broad range of payment options for making account deposits. These options include all Major credit/debit cards, PayPal, as well as VISA, MasterCard and American Express gift cards.

To withdraw funds from your account, you must make a request with DraftKings. If accepting a withdrawal with PayPal, it takes somewhere between two and eight business days for funds to appear. If accepting a check by mail, this can take anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks.

Responsible Gaming

A section on the DraftKings site is focused on responsible gaming. Here, you’ll find a message concerning the risks of spending too much time or money on the platform. It also addresses the dangers of underage gaming.

This section provides resources to assist anyone who thinks they or someone they know may be exhibiting any problem gaming behavior. DraftKings also provides tools that can be used to self-impose your own limits for using the site.

Our Verdict

DraftKings provides a full-scale DFS platform that we think you should be playing. With all the features you expect from a DFS site, plus unique features that set it apart from the competition. DraftKings is no doubt one the best DFS platforms out there.

This is the biggest name in fantasy sports. We know everyone’s seen the DraftKings commercials on TV but seeing the real thing from your computer and mobile device will have you drafting rosters with your friends and others online in no time.
