Horse Racing Betting Sites
Whether you're new to betting on horse racing entirely or simply moving your stakes to online bookmakers, this guide will give you an overview of important things to keep in mind, things to consider before making a bet, and what some of the betting terminology means.
Essentially, the main aspects of horse racing betting online are just the same as at any brick-and-mortar bookmakers. Odds will vary depending on favorites, past performances of each horse and jockey, as well as expectations. Horse racing is very appealing if you like digging into stats too, as there's lots to consider. Kentucky Derby betting is very popular in the United States, much like Cheltenham betting in the UK.
How to Bet on Horse Racing
There are two main ways to place bets on a horse. The first is simply choosing a horse with the odds you like (7/1 for example), then placing your chosen stake. Horse racing betting odds work the same way as in any other sport, in that 7/1 odds means you'll get $7 winnings for every $1 you bet. It's also worth noting that generally speaking, the higher the odds (like 15/1), the riskier the bet, because these are horses the bookies don't think have a chance to win. That said, bookies aren't always right, but such bets should be taken with caution.
You can also bet each way on a horse. This means backing a horse to not only win, but also to place. In many ways this is a safer option, but it is effectively two bets in one, so you'll have to spend per stake. The advantage is that if your horse wins, you win both bets at once. Additional markets include betting on placement order, or the first two or three horses to finish, and so on. These are generally very difficult to predict though, so if you do go down this route make sure to bet very conservatively or you could quickly lose money. More on this below.
What's the Difference Between an Exacta and a Trifecta?
Exacta betting is placing a bet on any two horses in a single race to finish first and second, respectively. There are a few potential advantages to betting this way. First, it doesn't actually matter which order the horses finish in if you choose to box the bet, as long as they're either first or second. Second, placing a stake this way can be cheaper in many cases. It is quite a risky bet, though.
Trifecta betting is almost identical to exacta betting, only in this case you choose three horses instead of two.
What to Consider When Making Horse Racing Betting Picks
As mentioned earlier, there are a lot of factors to consider when placing a horse racing bet. If you enjoy looking through stats and weighing up a lot of variables, then you're likely to enjoy delving into the many possibilities horse racing offers. Generally, there are two main things to consider:
Race horses go through intense training to reach the pinnacle of their fitness, but no two horses will run the same. While the jockey is an important aspect to consider, the horses themselves are the real stars here. Before placing a bet, take a moment to look up the performance of the horse in past races. If it's a new runner, then it could be hard to predict how it will perform. It's also worth considering what stables the horse was trained at, as some trainers have better track records than others.
Much like with any other kind of race, the track often plays a key role in the performance of the horses and the outcome of the race. The ground condition is especially important in horse racing and can seriously affect how fast or how easily a horse can run. Frozen ground tends to make falls and injury more likely, while muddy ground will slow the pace. While track conditions are often at the mercy of the weather, it's something to keep in mind. Looking up the history of the track's races can give you a decent overview of what to expect.
